At what point is it okay to drop the 2 years of retail management experience I have off of my resume? It's completely unrelated to what I do now and I did it as an interim job (right out of college) when I couldn't find a job in my field. I have freelance work that can fill in that time gap, but I'm not sure if it's okay to remove it from my resume. I have 4 years of experience after the 2 years of retail management (plus 4 more counting internships and freelancing while in college and just out of college). I feel like it's cluttering my resume, although management experience probably isn't a bad thing. Thoughts?

What I did (because I have some previous experience that I used as filler on my resume until I had 'real' jobs to put on there and in my field) was drop them as soon as I had work experience that related to the field that I am working in/want to work in. Especially since you have freelance work you can use to fill in the time gap since college. There is no rule about having to put all of your previous jobs on there. Unless the employeer ask you disclose all previous jobs in the past x years I would consider it unecessary.

The management experience can be nice for a resume though. But, in all honesty with the most recent 4 years and freelance stuff you have I would focus on that instead.

If it's completely unrelated to the job you are applying for I would leave it off and add "freelance" in for that time period.

I dropped about six years of early career experience because it:

A. No longer was relevant to the jobs I was seeking, and

B. Made me seem much younger.
