Pave diamond bands
Permalink Closed

This September is my 5 year anniversary with DH. I have always liked pave settings and thought about asking for a pave diamond band. But, I've been reading reviews on various sites and apparently because of the setting style, diamonds can come loose fairly easily.

The way I see it I have 3 options:
1. Ask for a band that isn't an "eternity" style to cut down on the risk of losing stones, since I am assuming that they would more easily fall out from the bottom side of the ring that would be bumped around a lot.

2. Pick one I like and just not wear it daily, make it more of a special occasion ring, which wasn't my original intention.

3. Pick anohter style or get some sort of insurance or protection plan that will replace missing and lost stones.

Does anyone have any experience or advice with pave settings?

TIA

My wedding ring is made of round stones channel set in a platinum band.  Mine is not an eternity ring.  Mine has 10 stones in it.

I think the option in which you do not get an "eternity" ring with the pave' diamonds is best.  Buy from a higher-end jeweler that offers coverage or other plans in case stones are lost.

Mine looks like this, but it isn't eternity.  I like the ability to turn it around on my finger and have a simple-looking band sometimes instead of the diamonds.  BTW - this band serves as my engagement ring and my wedding band.  I have no other ring on my finger.

I was going to suggest channel set also as I have a similiar ring to pollyjean's... I*think* channel set would be a safer option than pave.

a pave diamond band is typically set like this
14k Gold 1/2 ct Round Pave Semi Eternity Diamond Band (H-I-J / I1-I2)
or this
14k Gold 1/2ct TDW Diamond Pave Eternity Band
where there are little prongs around each stone or each stone is bezel set, and yes, with all the little prongs and how easily they can wear, or a bezel set where there is only a little lip of metal holding it in, there is increased risk of losing a stone.

the ring that pollyjean posted is a channel set ring

I have two channel set rings (one wedding, one anniversary) and the stones do not go all the way around.  I did want an eternity band for the anniv. band, but found a ring that I really liked and looked good with my set so I went with that.  I have never had an issue with losing channel set stones.

My engagement ring and eventual wedding band have pave diamonds. While I absolutely love it, I have only been engaged for one month and have had diamonds fall out. =( My jeweler told me to come in every 6mths so he could check all of the diamonds to prevent them from falling out. I'm hoping that the initial problem won't happen anymore, but I do have insurance in case it is a problem.

Both my engagement and wedding bands have pave diamonds, too.  I've worn my engagement ring for 6 years now and my wedding band for 2, and haven't had a single diamond fall out or prong need to be repaired, fwiw.

The pave diamonds on mine do not go all the way around, and I had my wedding band connected to my engagement ring to keep it from spinning around and it eliminates all but the most random of dings to the diamonds.  Though I originally wanted both to be eternity bands, I'm glad they're not now for many reasons - I can wear my ring all the time if I want, and don't have to worry about getting the diamonds dirty (even applying lotion, etc); I don't get scratched by diamonds on the underside of the band; and the undersides of the bands are tapered for comfort.

I also got both rings and Shane Co, and they don't charge extra for cleaning, inspection, repair, or replacement of stones so if the need did arise the coverage is already there.

D, I like this one! This is the style I had in mind, as opposed to the single row style posted. I do like the channel set bands too. Maybe it's time to go to the jewelry store and start looking at what looks best on my finger.
