DCS - Hecht's @ Ballston, but the suitcases weren't $30 - I meant I could get them for $30 LESS than their sale price ... but I decided not to after all. Anyway, they were on sale for like $220 for the 24 inch red one and then the little tote thing was like $65, maybe? And the duffel was like $100. Still a great deal for swiss!

bumblebee - I think they work well on the wood flooors and also the ceramic tiles in my bathroom...

I really got it for my carpets (half of my place is required by condo law or whatever to be carpeted) but am pleased with the performance on haard surfaces, too.

ah, silly me, got excited and misread your original post.  Still, those prices aren't too shabby.  Last year Bloomie's had a good sale on them as well, under $200, I think...didn't have the money at the time, though.

dc - make sure you keep the roller free of hair - that pissed-off noise is apparently the signal to clean it. Which is, I admit, a faintly disgusting task. But it'll get damaged otherwise. Also, that noise is really, really loud and grating. I don't think I could put up with it for more than a few seconds.

Bumblebee - My whole house is either hardwood or flagstone flooring and the Dyson is awesome on them, too. it actually has a setting - I think it is either carpet, deep pile carpet, or hard flooring, and you just switch the setting depending on what you are vacuuming. I am not sure about dc's model, but the Animal has this.
