woohoo! got me a new dyson vacuum!
Permalink Closed

I am so excited about my shiny yellow new dyson vacuum (you know, with the english dude in the commercials talking about how he designed it to never lose suction?). I got $200 worth of gift certificates through our rewards program and regualr holiday gift thing at work and redeemed them for mall certificates today. The vacuum was marked down to $369 from like $400 or something, and so after my gift certs I got it for $169, which is awesome! I have long been wanting a fancy vacuum but - though I will spend $500 on shoes - it seemed a bit steep.

Plus I got $30 in discount cards back with my purchase, so I can go back tomorrow and pick up the swiss army luggage they had on sale for $30 less!

Anyway, I know I sound like a total bore, but I can't wait to use my new vacuum! I have been using my college vacuum since, well, college (so like junior year started in 1991... yeesh). Although I guess that speaks very well for the lifetime of a sears kenmore $99 vacuum.

is it an upright?  you have to give us an update as to how you like it.  i have used miele vacuums and have been coveting one ever since (they start at $350 for a little one and go up to $800ish for a normal size one), so i would be interested to hear if the dyson is as good as that english guy makes it sound.

good job working the discounts -- i hate spending money on stuff like this too -- its always so much better when you can get a great deal.

hey e_doli - this is the one... it is an upright, but it has this handy dandy hose that extends pretty far as well:

http://www.dyson.com/range/feature_frame.asp?model=DC07-SY-HEPA

here's a pic

My friend has a miele and she's very fond of that. I'd also been thinking of an oreck because the guy in the commercials seemed all nice and dad-like (I am very scientific, you see), but lately I got obsessed with this yellow beaut. And I read a bunch of good reviews on amazon and I was sold... will try it out and report back.

That's the exact one I have, dc, except mine is the "purple Animal" version (it comes with extra attachments to deal with pet hair...and is purple). I have to say, I rarely am as happy with a practical purchase as I have been with the Dyson. It is one of the few expertly engineered consumer products out there these days - by which I mean it is easy and convenient to use, which is saying a lot for a vacuum. It is also so satisfying to see all the crap being sucked up into that transparent canister! Dyson RULZ.

ohhhh, I want the Dyson Animal so badly. The little guy in my avatar sheds like it's going out of style. My husband refuses to spend $500 on a vacuum though.

Ooooooh...*drools*

dc, you lucky girl! Dyson has to be the coolest thing in vacuums, ever. This is probably the only vacuum that would motivate me to actually vacuum. Plus my BF is sorta OCD about cleanliness and we'd probably just stare at the dust in the canister.

We have the animal as well, it is the single greatest piece of machinery/appliance I own. I can't say enough about what it does. We have one cat and a Black Lab beast who seems to constantly shedding, my house looks so neat and clean now.

PS) we stare at the dust canister too.

Ally - my house is now about 10x cleaner than it was BD (Before Dyson) - just because I actually *like* vacuuming now. Whoever had that clear-canister idea was a damned marketing genius.

you guys are torturing me!  It is sad when a vaccum seems like a really cool toy, but I can't help it!

Ok, so i used my new dysons and it's quite something!  My house was apparently FILTHY because I filled the canister to max 2.5 times (granted, my cat and I shed a lot). And my condo is like 650 sq ft.  My last vacuum was doing nothing!  Seriously, I just vacuumed with my other vacuum a week ago.  That is so tragic.

Anyway, everything went great except it won't work on my flokati rug.  I have a white floko (yes, very 70s) under my DR table - it's huge & white.  Anyway, when I set the vacuum to "carpet" it makes an awful clattering racket and the roller brush things gets all messed up - but when I set it to "floor" it does nothing at all (it turns on, it just doesn't seem to suck anything up from the rug).  What am I donig wrong?  It works great on my wood floors, tile, and my other lower carpets and wall-to-wall.  I just don't think it knows what to do with flokati.

This is a floko, for those who don't know:

Ah! dc - I *love* flokati rugs! You are the first person I've known who actually has one. As for the vacuuming, I think you might be screwed - is it making that very loud angry noise? When it makes that it means it is unhappy and getting crap wound around the rollers (I shed a lot of long, thick hair and my hair actually sets it off every now and again). This would be time-consuming but you could use the wand on it if you had someone/something to weigh down the corners?

Also, I hear you on the filth! I was shocked by how much crap there was that the previous vacuum wasn't getting. When I 'tested' it out at my parent's house we tried it on a rug, and it turned into the whole house, my mother insisted, alternately fascinated and horrified by how much just...dirt...there was in the carpets/rugs.

You girls are encouraging me!  DH's parents gave us $500 for Christmas and we are thinking about getting the Dyson Animal.  We have 4 animals and our current vac does absolutely nothing!

I can't even tell you how much I hate the idea of spending our Christmas money on something as practical as a vacuum!  I could be buying shoes!

Luckylily, get it! I had more fun with that thing than my Manolos.

It is totally fascinating to see what it sucked up. I was so embarrassed yesterday because I was telling my coworkers about my purchase at a staff meeting and I got all excited and confessed about the 2.5 canisters of filth I sucked up. I am always telling them things I probably should keep to myself without thinking. Everyone was like, "Ew -gross!" and then I realzied they thought I was a filthy slob. I tried to explain that I'd only vacuumed with the Kenmore a week before, but I could see they didn't believe me... sigh. They don't just understand the Power of the Dyson (well, one coworker tried to say she'd had a similar experience with her vacuum, but i think she was just trying to make me feel better). Plus, the canister is not so big.

Mia, it IS making the loud and angry noise. And ditto on the human hair as well - when I was done with my bathroom rug (which is actually a bristly grass floormat that does plenty of its own shedding - I sucked a ton of that up) there was all this dc hair wrapped around the brush paddle thing. Ew. I noticed with the floko that right away there were white yarns all around it. I triedc using the stair tool, but I think that flokatis are just made to be taken outside and beaten, just like in their origins in Greece. No vacuum can tackle the floko.

does it work really well on the hardwood floors? i have them throughout my place and had never even thought to use a vacuum--i just sweep and mop.  but the enthusiasm is contagious and now i am kind of getting excited that i might be eligible to buy a dyson!
