Bridesmaid dresses

Hey ladies, I have a friend who is getting married and she is planning on all the bridesmaids wearing a different dress that are the same color. I think that is a good idea, but the only requirement is the the color. I am her maid of honor and a really good friend, so we are going to pick out my dress together. The other bridesmaids are spread out all over the country so they are just going to pick out their own. I think this is a big mistake. I have seen what people where to weddings and what they think is appropriate. I think she needs to be a little more specific about length and style. I know this is her wedding and she can do what she wants. I just want to know if I am in the minority in my thinking.

The only way I'd do this is if it was the David's Bridal dresses that they have in different styles but all the same color.  They have the mix and match tops and skirts.  This way they'd have some leeway but not too much and everything will be the same color and appropriate and David's is located in all 50 states so they shouldn't have a problem finding one in their state.

People need specific instructions. if the color is green someone could end up w/lime or puke or ya never know! short/long/tea length. it all matters. I've seen gorgeous pix of weddings w/all the girls in tea length w/all different shoes and all you could focus on were the shoes.

i'm very detail oriented, but i think it matters. check out martha stewart or photographers websites for some pix of different shades of one color in one wedding. i've seen some really well done versions of this, but i don't know if they were posed or real weddings.

GOOD LUCK! at least you'll get ot pick a color you like!

you know, i tried to do this but none of my bms seemed too enthused.  i was originally going to let everyone choose a knee to tea length dress in a shade of blue.  but then the control freak in me came out and started worrying that it would be too hard to coordinate it all and what if one girl picked out something that didn't go and what about the fabrics, etc.  even though i don't particularly like the idea of 5 grown women wearing the same outfit, it was just so much easier for everyone in the end.  i too had seen the cutest photo in a martha stewart book of bms wearing different dresses in shades of pink/red.  it's just hard to do.  if your friend does a lot of research and emails photos of options for her girls to choose from, it might work.

I tried this too, and it didn't work. Especially because, despite what you might think, different shades of the same color don't always match. My friend is trying to do this now with black dresses, and even that is weird because the material is gonna end up different.

I am going to be the dissenter here, but my sister did this for her wedding.  She wanted us all to wear red dresses (I don't know if you remember my frantic red dress search on FH).  She didn't care about the fabric or any particular shade of red, it just couldn't be too pink.  She asked the BMs to run the dresses by me when they chose them.  It turned out really well and looked great in the pictures.  A lot of people came up and told us how they liked us in different red dresses.

I think it all boils down to how the bride feels about the matching of fabrics and stuff.  If she can live with the differences then its her wedding let her do what she wants.  If she is anal and a control freak she isn't going to like the results and you should probably talk her out of it.  Just figure out what kind of person she is and guide her accordingly.
