I am in uganda doing study abroad for a year and the university did not have a student newspaper when i got here so a friend (male) and i decided to try to start one- so we have a monthly newsletter right now and will expand to newspaper format next semester (yup, i will be back in the states) we are about to incorporate the company and we need a name, and i am stumped!!(i think we are having an identity crisis) over time, the company will be producing a weekly newslettter, a monthly newspaper, an annual alumni magazine and an "alternative prospectus"- but the parent company may expand into non publishing areas so we really need a parent company name and a publishing company name- something with media/house/publishing on the end i think- for example, _____ Media, a subsidiary of _______ Corporation.....im overwhelmed- not sure where to start. we don't want anything to studenty......also uganda is a very conservative place so nothing too crazy (Jamcracker or the like)- parent company names here take the form of _______investments, ______holdings ltd. or __________ corporation- please post any and all ideas! in any and all languages! (greek/latin comes to mind) thanks so much!!!
(so far, for the parent company, we have the names obsidian corp. or onyx corp- are they are bad as i think?)
Both of those that you already came up with sorta sound like they would be the names of the teams on the Apprentice.
Will this company be primarily for the Ugandan university? Perhaps something dealing with their history? What is the main language? What about a popular saying or something?
What about something as simple as East Africa Publishing?

actually, our original name choice was Equator Publishing (the newsletter is called the Equator) but upon drawing up incorporation papers, our lawyer said not to use it because it may cause brand confusion (loads of companies use equator around here, as well as Nile, Oasis, Africa____, Uganda _____, Kilimanjaro_____, etc. Also, because of pervasive tribalism using any of the local languages is out.
Thanks for the comment about the names we have so far- gosh, why is this so hard?
anymore thoughts out there? The lawyer wants 5 names in order of preference asap- sigh...
I agree with keeping it generic. I assume you've done a search to find similar names and avoid trademark infringement.
I believe I filed a few different but similar names, anticipating that I might change directions or expand and also anticipating that other people might get it wrong.
What about ____ Communications? That's more open-ended than "Media" or "Publishing."
Perhaps look at an online glossary of geography terms?
