I'm trying to figure out a good drink (or a few good drinks) to have for New Year's. I want to party and have a good time, my only problem is that I have bad hangovers. Any recommendations? I like sweet drinks but not TOO sweet.
Smith & Wesson (apricot nectar, amaretto & tequilla)
those were drinks i had a LONG time ago & liked them b/c they're sweet, but not too sweet. i found this site that provides recipes both by name & type of drink.
I think anything with amaretto will be sweet and not cause horrible hangovers. I love amaretto sours but can't even get a buzz off of them. I could drink them all night and not feel anything then or the next day. That might not be what you are going for though.
On the other hand oj and vodka can knock me out with just one drink and I always puke and feel nasty the next day so you might want to be careful with that combo if not for you but for someone else.
i think the only way to avoid hangovers is to avoid excessive drinking which is hard to do on nye. i would avoid sugary drinks that have lots of ingredients b/c sugar can often make you sicker than alcohol, and stick to basic drinks that only have 1 alcohol and 1 mixer (i.e. vodka and cranberry juice, rum & coke). also request the kind of alcohol you want. if you don't ask for a specific brand like ketel one or grey goose, most bars will give you well alcohol, which is lower quality. lastly drink lots of water throughout the evening, and pace yourself. not to sound like your mom, but you don't have to get plastered to have a good time.
eta: as far as a specific drink, i really like ketel one & soda with a splash of rose's lime water. it's really refreshing and kind of sweet without being too sugary.
I drink Absolut & 7 or Absolut & tonic with lots of lime. Its been to my experience that when I drink clear drinks along with decent liquor I dont get bad hangovers like I used to get when all I drank was crown with 7 or coke. I don't know how factual that is, but its just my experience.
well, this year we decided to skip the big NYE party and hang out at home with another couple. i'm really looking forward to it. but having had some very drunken NYE, I think I can give you some pointers.
the other girls all gave you good advice. i too remember reading somewhere that drinks that are dark and drinks that are sugary cause the worst hangovers (i.e. rum and cokes, whiskey, and I think esp. amaretto). the best way to avoid a hangover is just to limit your drinking, like honey said. but if you know you'll be drinking a lot, stick to either beer, wine, or a mixed drink, don't switch them up. and the drinking water thing works really well, too. you'll end up drinking less, being more hydrated, and having more fun (IMO). be sure to eat a solid meal at dinner so you have food in your stomach.
you can still get a nice buzz without getting shitfaced if you just pace yourself (limit yourself to no more than 1-2 drinks an hour) and take the advice given above. oh and stay away from champagne, because the bubbles make you get drunk really fast and can give you a nasty hangover.
if i seem like a know-it-all on this issue, it's because I am like you - very sensitive to alcohol. I've had some nasty experiences with hangovers (one just recently). just be careful. i don't know, the NYE's where i ended up getting plastered have been the least fun for me. and there's something depressing about spending the first day of the new year with a nagging hangover, or worse, throwing up and being in bed all day.
but enough lecturing, have fun ringing in the new year and good luck avoiding a hangover
ah - just realized i didn't even give you what you asked for - a drink rec - i like gin and tonic with a good gin, like Bombay Sapphire, with a twist of lime. it's not sweet enough to make you sick, but the gin has a faint sweetness and flavor to it.
bellinis, yummm. i don't know the exact ingredients but i think it's peach puree w/ champagne. i'm so not a big drinker and have the tolerance of a 12 year old but bellinis are my absolute fave and have never made me sick. Happy New Year!
Farrah can attest to this - I've had the absolute worst hangover of my life drinking gin/tonic. Tanqueray to be exact. Lesson to be learned, everything in moderation.
That said, I'd still stick to clear liquors. Also drink plenty of water in between drinks and before bed.
I've also tried Chaser (sold at walgreens) which is said to prevent wine headaches and now hangovers. It seemed to work pretty well on Sangria nights. And a coworker swears by Liver-right (sp?) and he's a heavy drinker.
Have a fun night!

I sure can!! I felt so bad for you that day:(.
Honestly though, everyone is different so what works for one may not work for the other. My old faithful is Miller Lite, but even I get a hangover from it sometimes and I can't go near vodka or I will turn in to an animal and have my head stuck in a toilet for 24 hours. You are just going to have to take it easy and remember to drink plenty of water while you are drinking. I also suggest Chaser, it works pretty well.
On a side note, Vanessa, were we even hung over after that wild night that we met Apollo and the Ricker was wearing a shearling coat in June? I don't think we were (which is amazing to me considering the fact that we basically drank anything that we could get our hands on)...the only thing that I remember was that you kissed my wall on the way to the bathroom. Oh and that we walked barefoot back to my aparrment after Le Passage. HA!! That night was so awesome - it will go down in history for sure!!

ok forgive me if this sounds completely idiotic but my cousin once told me the way to prevent a hangover was to eat half a raw potato before going out (before drinking) and then eat the other half when u get home before u go to bed. i've never tried it so i dunno if it works, but if ur desperate, try this? as for drink rec. i always go w/ malibu & pineapple but i don't get hangovers so i'm not sure if it causes them or not. good luck & have fun... oh & make sure someone is looking out for u, i once wandered off w/ a stranger while drunk & ended up making out in an underground parking lot.... tmi sorry!
