Yesterday my boyfriend and I were supposed to travel to Chicago to be with his family. Instead, we spent over 6 hours in Newart airport. Our flight from Newark to DC was canceled so we couldn't make our connecting flight to Chicago. It was such a nightmare. I think I spent over 4.5 hours in different lines. At least I was lucky enough to have my parents pick us up (we had just spent a couple of days with them).
The worst part is that we won't be able to fly out until the 26th. I guess alot of other people probably have worse travel stories than that... and I am happy to spend Xmas with my parents... but all that time in the airport was a big time bummer! My bf and I even got so hungry we had to break into my Christmas cookie stash.
you poor thing! the 24th was a crazy day. i got stuck in newark airport too! don't every fly u.s. airways. i didn't realize until much too late that it was the airline that declared bankruptcy (for some reason i thought it was united). the first flight i was supposed to be on was cancelled b/c over 300 flight attendants called out sick. then they put me on another flight that was overbooked, so i couldn't get on the plane. i was on the verge of tears talking to the ticketing agent, who kept telling me "hold on they are going to see if anyone is willing to give up their seat." however, as he's saying this i see them rolling the boarding pasage (or whatever it's called) away from the plane. anyway i ended up barely getting on a plane the next day. the guy had to "force" me on b/c it was overbooked, but i think he felt sorry for me b/c i was crying. though in truth 1/2 of me was crying b/c i was frustrated and the other 1/2 of me was crying b/c i knew it would build sympathy for my cause.
anyway i hope things work out, and make sure they compensate you for all the trouble they put you through. i took advantage of every perk possible (hotel room --even though i live close enough to take the train, refund, change in flight plan, and a free meal) the only thing i didn't ask for was an upgrade to 1st class. i didn't want to push my luck.
well i told a little white lie to get the hotel. i live in jersey city, so i could've gone home, but it would've been such a pain in the a** to come back in the am for the flight. and they could only give me a voucher for a cab home, not coming back. so i told the guy i lived in nyc and tried to look extra pathetic. and he was like "oh that's too far for you to go home."
you should try and get a refund for your ticket too, esp. since they totally screwed up your holiday travel.
