spyware/adware

I keep getting these annoying spyware and adware things popping up on my computer. I have yahoo anti-spy and a pay anti-virus program that's supposed to get spyware as well. I run the anti-spy program and it finds the adware, I delete it, I run it again and it's gone, and then the a few surfs later I run it again and a different one is back.

Is there a better anti-spyware program I should be using? My browsers need my permission to allow a cookie (firefox) and I've blocked all cookies on IE. I've also added all the bad sites to my "block" list just to be sure.

I must have downloaded something but I can't think what. Any suggestions?

it's been years since I used a free one that was really good, I can't remember which one and it's probably obsolete now.  But I remember that I did find it helpful to check cnet.com for reviews and geek forums.

Hmmmm. I don't know. I use Norton and I've never had a problem.

Just fwiw, since Norton is such a known anti-virus program, hackers have alot of fun making viruses that disable it but let it keep telling you that it's scanning your computer and everything is fine.  Personal experience on that one.

I use free downloadable Spybot for spyware and AVG for virus protection.  I've been using them for almost 3 years with no problems at all.  AVG even tells you how many intrusion attempts it's blocked.  I also have a ZoneAlarm firewall, which is free as well I believe.  The AVG updates automatically every day, the Spybot has to be updated manually weekly, and the ZoneAlarm updates automatically but must be reinstalled yearly (takes less than 10 minutes though).

Do you have your pop-up blocker turned on?  Also, I have a great, free spyware/adware program on my home computer - I just can't remember the name..I'll look when I get home and post it.

I have Trend Micro AntiVirus and it works/has worked pretty well. I like it because it doesn't affect my computer as much as Norton or McAfee. I finally broke down and renewed my subscription to SpySweeper, which has worked in the past.

But I'm running into the same problem. I have all my security up high, the spyware programs find the spyware and deletes, and after a few clicks, they're back again.

If nothing else, does anyone have any suggestions of websites where I can research the problem? It's starting to frustrate me even though it's not a huge problem. It's just annoying that I can't get rid of it.

Bluebirde - do you have a firewall?  Ours has really, really helped and we haven't had a problem since installing it.  Some people have told us that it's unecessary because your modem (or something ...?) is supposed to have one, but if it does it's a worthless piece of crap.

You could also try doing a clean re-install of your virus/spyware programs.  It may fix any previous glitches that are allowing things through.
