How do you know the difference between the (stomach) flu and food poisoning?

One of the key indicators is how often you're actually throwing up or going to the bathroom. If you're throwing up every 15 minutes, or every 20 minutes (or something similiar) it's probably food poisoning. It tends to be "time released"...
If you're getting sick more sporadically and not really on a schedule, it's probably the flu or a stomach virus.
Either way, try to keep drinking fluids. They may be difficult to keep down, but it really will make you feel better.

I read that there's actually no such thing as the stomach flu. The flu is influenza and those symptoms are aches, fever, low energy, and some congestion.
An upset stomach is either food poisoning or a virus of some sort.

NCshopper's right. The actual influenza virus doesn't cause any stomach issues. It's more of an all-over body ache type of thing with a fever. With the flu, you may feel so run-down though that you don't have an appetite and then you get cramps or something from being so hungry. But generally, if your stomach is really upset and you're either throwing up or naseous, it could be be just a "bug". It's not necessarily food poisoning- that's pretty uncommon. Do you remember eating anything before you got sick? It would be within a couple of hours.
Either way...if you're still feeling sick, I hope you feel better soon!
