i know saving and how to save came up a couple of times on fh. i just wanted to share my tip (which i've seen before so it's not anything that i invented, but it really works.) anyway everyday when i come home i dump all my change into a little vase. i've been doing this regularly for about 2, maybe 2.5 months and i just cashed my change in. i had a medium sized ziplock bag (not the huge ones) and it wasn't entirely full, and i ended up getting $75 back. it was like free money! anyway i just wanted to share b/c this is one of the few things that really works for me, b/c it's not like i "miss" the money.
my sister and i lived for our first 3 days in japan on money that we got from turning in coins. we had a ton of coins between the two of us, plus my coworker took pity on us and donated his coins too. it definitely felt like "free" money!
I was just talking about this with some of my cousins the other day- they do this too and every time the go away they cash in the coins. This last vacation they cashed in $300 but the vacation before that - they had about $800 worth of coins!
My best friends family does this. They each save their change and throw it into a comunal change bucket. There are 7 of them, and each child usually brings a friend. They always have enough money to go on vacation on the change. It is really amazing how much change can add up to. My boyfriend and I started the change bucket a couple of months ago and we already have $400. Its great.
i did this when i was going to miami and saved $150! it really does feel like 'free money' -- i remember my history teacher would tell us that every year him and his wife would go on vacation with the change that they turned in.
