I love Narciso Rodriguez and have always wanted one of his dresses. I really like this one b/c I think I'd wear it for years as my standby little black dress.... but it's pretty much a grand. What's the diff b/w spending a grand on a dress, though, than on a purse (I have several in that range)? For those of you familiar with my style, this is quintessential me - I love things that are sleek, sexy yet "classy", and black. It's a pre-order, though... I'd love it for dinner NYE, but not sure it'll make it on time:
This Narciso is one sale for $705, but I am a little worried that my breast reduction scars might show in the front middle (i.e. I can't wear bikinis that are triangle-tops) and it doesn't seem so timeless... but it is a good price, and foxy.
I would go with your first choice, its very elegant and beautiful. You spend that much money on bags so go ahead and buy yourself a dress you've been wanting from Narciso. Like you said, you'll wear it more than once and you can mix it up with diff. shoes, accessories and through a mixture of different clothes with it.
the first one is gorgeous--so classic. the second one is not nearly as special, and i think you won't get the years of wear out of it that you will get out of the first one. it's a lot of money, but if you have it and want to make an investment, i think the first dress is a really great choice.
How tall are you dc? For some reason the length would be a problem for me if you were 5 '5' or under. Is there a larger picture of it available? I can't really make out detail. Although it's a basic truth that a $1000 dress, black and simple or no, is going to be cut and made exquisitely. Do you have anything else in mind?

Mia... I am 5'5" and wear very high heels. i see your point though. Here's another bigger pic... though I am not sure if that helps. It looks like there is some seaming down the front.
I don't have any other candidates... I just sort of fixated on this dress.

Do you have long legs (like, in comparison to your torso)? I am also 5 foot 5 but could not wear this due to long torso and average length (ok, maybe a little short *sob*) legs.
What material is the dress made out of?
Can you try it on or is it online ordering?
I like it but with caveats, mainly due to the fact that I am liking it on a model who is probably 5 foot 11 and 115 lbs.

Mia, you are quite the interrogator (but this is probably good when $1000 is at stake)
I am built like you are - long-ish torso and sort of short legs (hence the constant wearing of high heels)
I am only sort of slim - 5'5" and 118. I guess that's averag-ish in build.
No clue what the dress is made of (which I admit I probably should have looked into...)
Might be able to try on at local Neiman's... I might call and find out.
It is true that I got a similar dress from DVF (below) and it looked totally weird on me and I had to send it back, and I do think it had to do with my proportions. Also I have very sqaure shoulders and this DVF wanted someone with daintier audrey shoulders.

Well you seem to really love it so I say get it and try it on carefully and return if it doesn't work. Hassle, but you don't want to be "what if-ing" it if you don't get it.
Wow, also, we are practically exactly the same size (although I am about 121 lbs and 5 feet and 5 and THREE QUARTERS inches, so I guess what I am saying is I could take you if we ever had to fight over some Choos or something), body type etc. You even used to have the well-endowed chest like me! (I am still seriously thinking about doing what you did but that's way off topic)
I say get the dress, because it sounds like you really want it. Have an honest friend check you out in it and be brutal.

I think the dress is simply beautiful. No way around it. And if you buy bags in that price range, it's definitely okay (imo) to buy a little black dress - as long as it's timeless - to go with it.
My only concern: I would maybe get tired of the 3/4 length sleeves after awhile. Will you? If not, go for it!
I also agree with Mia though - no sense in spending that kind of money if you can't at least try it on first, right? Although you could always send it back if it didn't work...
If you get it, let us know - I hope it's as fabulous as you want it to be!
dc, I love the first dress. I think it's beautiful and timeless and I'd love to own it. The second one doesn't even compare.
Can you still get it from Neimans (i.e. was it in one of their catalogs?) I ask because I have a 15% catalog order discount sitting around for being a Preferred customer or whatever they call it. I was planning on buying some things the week after Christmas (um, namely a bag). I think it expires the 31st. So if you want to throw the dress in there, e-mail me. You can paypal me or something.
I'm flying to El Paso tomorrow for the next two weeks during which I plan to be on the internet a lot more, except for a few days I'll be in NM. I'm still going through forum withdrawals! So I'll be around. Let us know if you get it!

both are nice, but i like the 1st one best. there's a classic elegance about it that the 2nd one doesn't provide. reminds me of Jackie O or Grace Kelly.
LOVE the first dress...SO classic. RL had a very similar dress on their web site but it is not there any more. It was about $995, but most of his dresses are on sale now. Maybe ypu could find it at one of his stores? If you want a picture of it I do have it saved as a JPEG. I could e-mail it to you. My e-mail is service@boschslandscape.com
Love the first one - classic, simple, and yay - I'm not the only one who still likes all black! I am trying to examine the cut of it - it appears as though it may have a horizontal seam across the lap - don't know how that would lay on you - I would call the local Neiman's to see if they have it in stock to try on - even if they don't have it there, maybe at Saks? You don't have to buy it at another location - just try it on. If all else fails, I agree with the other posters that you should order it. I am envious - I too have a thing for Narciso Rodriguez - hey - pick one up for me too while you're at it

I am going to be very careful and not let my Narciso lust make me keep a dress that doesn't do b0orderline miraculous things for me - will def try it on for a friend and return if not stunning. Because really, for $1000, it should make me look awesome. So I will think a bit more (still only about 75% sure...) maybe call the store to see if they actually have one in person, and if not I will order and reserve the right to return it.
Thanks for all of your feedback girls - I am glad you like it... now let's see if it's the magic dress I hope it is. Will keep you posted.

I'll be honest (I hope you don't take offense just trying to help) but I don't *love* this dress at all. It's nice but it's not really 1k nice. I actually prefer the second dress (although I'm not crazy about that either) I think it has more va-va-voom which is one thing I would think would you'd want. I'm also basing it on the fact that I've seen you before so I know this dress would not do you nearly as much justice as it should. JMO and I hth
