Well, I'm going with a group of 9 other friends and this isn't my first time in NYC (I spent 2 months there on an internship) but it will be the first time for some of my friends...thus, I'm kinda of a designated tour guide...lol.  And I'm already familiar with all the typical touristy places (Times Square, Rockefellar, Soho, Chinatown, 5th Avenue, etc.).  I'm just curious about any 'hidden-secret-only-the-locals-know' cool spots that we should try.  We're a pretty young, adventurous group...so ANY suggestions would be appreciated!

You should walk down Broadway in Soho, Start at Houston and walk south 5-6 blocks. Go on all the side streets. Your friends will think you're the coolest! Also, walk down Bleeker in the West Village. Go to www.nymetro.com and look around, great for what is going on the week you'll be here. go specifically to: http://www.nymetro.com/urban/guides/bestofny/shopping/index.htm and print out the maps of the neighborhoods. get a map from: http://www.mta.nyc.ny.us/nyct/maps/submap.htm (you'll need it). Gosh, so many places to go!!!1

please feel free to check out any past posts on http://groups.yahoo.com/group/eventsbyJES/ I know i wrote about great places for Hot Chocolate (some near bleeker, some near soho), cupcakes, etc....real website coming soon after my meeetin tomorrow night w/the cute website guy....

let me know if there are any specific things you are interested in doing besides shopping...want to have a "real NY meal" try katzs on the lower east side. the perfect deli and in When harry met Sally(you really will be tour guide). great fun shopping there too. more funky than soho, but just as great.

yikes, it's 5pm. if you need more info please let me know. i LOVE NY and shop too much.

My favorite place in the world to eat lunch is Peanut Butter & Co. All they serve there is a mind-numbing amount of variations on peanut butter sandwiches. And the milk that goes along with it (soy and lactaid included ). It's a total nostalgia trip. I don't think too many tourists know about it. It's right by NYU Law School, so the place was packed with law students when I went with my best friend. I suggest getting a Peanut Butter BLT...would've tried the Elvis but they ran out of bananas that day (go early, by 1 PM they run out of the elvis because it's so popular). On, and they'll cut off the crusts if you so desire.

Not sure if you are on a budget at all but some of my favorite cheap eat places are right in union square

-Republic (Thai)
-Havana Central (Cuban)
-Mamouns (Falafels) right by PeanutButter and Co. $2 for a falafel yum!
-Not great Indian, but Balucchis 1/2 price lunch is also a great deal

Also I think places like Lucky Chengs and Lips and Waikki Wally's are fun places for people from out of town to go. Food is not great but the entertainment is pretty cool. I like to take people AWAY from times square and into more neighborhoods. I like the Upper East Side like walking on 3rd and all the little boutiques in the 70's (scoop, Precision, big drop)

Century 21 is a must plus it is right by the WTC site which is important for first timers to see. There are some fun boutiques around the lower east side too. With 9 people it is harder for dining so I suggest planning your days around your meals and make reservations if possible. www.opentable.com is good for that. Otherwise bring the restaurants number and call ahead so you are on the list.

I second the 3rd Ave on the Upper East. Might be pricy and busy for 9 people but worth it. We'll probably pass eachother on the street.

Also in Soho is a new-ish Bloomingdales with only the stuff you'd want to buy, no furniture, or stupid men's dept to wade through. men's dept is downstairs if you really really need something.

Also try City Bakery off 5th on 18th walk west at Express (stores are the best landmarks). DELISH food and some of the best hot chocolate anywhere. Good for a quick bite.
