Sneaky, sneaky Sephora
Permalink Closed

I just placed an order on Sephora.com and when I went to check out, they added stuff to my cart that I looked at, but passed up.  I think they did it so my total was over $50 to qualify for free shipping.  I thought this had happened last time, too, but I thought maybe I had made a mistake and put it in there myself.  I just thought this was interesting.

That is sneaky. I am always so nervous that is going to happen or they will charge me twice for something.

wow, that's a bit weird.  i haven't had that occur, but will definitely monitor my bag/cart the next time i "look" & am ready to place an order.

I'm not surprised at all. They do that to me every time I place an order. They take things that you've recently put into your cart and add it to it just before you place the order. Also, to be careful, make sure they don't add to the amount of items you want. I've found that they'll be sneaky and add 2 of something when I only want one.

i've found that this happens at a lot of online stores but it isn't to be sneaky. often what happens is that when you are logged in to the site you might add some things to your cart but not buy them at that time. for most sites, when you are logged in to your account, the items you put into your cart will be saved for a certain amount of time. then the next time you browse the site, you might now be logged in but you start adding stuff to your cart - when you go to check out, you have to log in to your account and at this time, the site will add the new items to the "saved" items in your cart from your previous browsing session. some sites will alert you to this (they will pop up a window that says "the cart contents have changed since last update" or something like that) but sometimes they won't alert you. basically the website is set up to remember things that were put into your cart at an earlier shopping "session." so that might be what happened in this case... i don't think sephora can legally add items to your cart between your selecting checkout and paying, so i doubt that is what is happening...

Smash, it wasn't stuff I had added to the shopping cart before.  They were items I had just looked at when I was trying to decide what to buy.  When I selected shopping cart and it brings you to the screen where you review your order before picking "checkout", they were there.  I think that they do that to show that if you order $75 worth of stuff you get free shipping because the total with those items came to $75 exactly.

I can honestly say I shop Sephora online frequently and this has never happened to me. I have experienced what Smash is talking about, but it was easily fixable.
