Help! I need to get two gifts this weekend and I'm at a complete loss!

1. My coworker. He's 35, married, three kids. We're really great friends but I don't want to get him something too personal but don't want to get anything generic either. He's into sports (Red Sox, Patriots) and pop culture stuff but at the same time doesn't have a lot of free time. The only thing I can think of is a DVD or CD but that doesn't seem very original.

2. The concierge/front desk person at my apartment building. I feel like I should get him something since he delivers packages to apartments (and I do a lot of online shopping) and has helped me with guest parking and other stuff. I know he eats McDonalds for lunch a lot, is $50 in McD's gift certs a stupid idea?

Thanks so much, ladies!

For your coworker what about a nice bottle of wine or champagne.  You could also get him a gift certificate to a restaurant.  My fave gift to give couples is a gift cert to a restaurant and/or movie theatre and then promise of a babysitter (you) for free for the evening they go out.

I think the McDonalds gift cert is perfect!!

I think the McDonalds gift card is a good idea for the front desk person.

For your friend maybe a gift card to a restaurant that he likes-w/ three kids he may want to get out of the house or maybe you could even offer to baby-sit and give him a gift card so he and his wife could have a night out. Or a gift card to Best Buy. I always love getting those. I would rather get somone something generic that I know they will use instead of taking a chance on a gift I don’t know a person will like.

Or tickets to see one of his favorite baseball games. I know they are not playing now, but
I think you can order ahead of time. Does he like to read? Subscribtion to ESPN mag. with movie
tickets.

Do cash for the concierge, or AMEX gift checks rather that GCs for McDonalds.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone! I'll get the concierge an AmEx gift check (do they still make those or is it cards only?). I looked into Red Sox tickets and all tickets haven't gone on sale yet but the ones that have are sold out. And I can't babysit, he lives about two hours away (and yes, commutes it almost every day). He gave me one of those Entertainment coupon books a week or so ago as my present. Maybe I should give him the McD's gift certs....

I think it is pretty standard to give ~$50 in cash to a concierge - that is what I would do.
