I have three bedrooms in my new house and would like to use one of them for a closet/dressing room.
My mom suggested i use a closet system like California Closets to do the room, but I plan on selling this house at some point and don't think it's worth the investment.
Does anyone have suggestions about what kind of furniture, organizational system, and accessories I should use?

I think your wise to not listen to your mom about putting money into a California Closet considering you don't plan on staying at your current house for a long time.
I'm currently using Closetmaid freestanding pieces which you can stack and group together. The litle cubes perfectly hold folded tops and pants. I recently added a couple new pieces to display shoes and bags and it looks pretty cool.
I have one of these except mine has a top rack.
I think it would also be great to put an ottoman in there to sit on when you put on shoes or decide what to wear.
Oooh, I did this last summer and had the same problem with wanting it to not be permanent (or too pricey). I got a bunch of shelving at Target- they might be closetmaid? Anyway, I got a few cabinet-like things (they're a few feet high and have shelves inside and a door) and then I hung bars in between those (so that nothing had to be attatched directly to the wall)
I think nice things to have in there are a full length mirror, a way to display shoes, a way to display "pretty things" (I have a seperate cart with a hanging bar for pretty dresses), and someplace to sit. And a pretty light fixture and nice paint on the walls! Mine is still a work in rogress, but I'm going for a very boutique like feel- liek I'm walking into my own little store every morning.
Things are crazy at work right now, but maybe I can find time to take some pics over the weekend.
I have seen some great shelving systems at Container Store - I think its called Elfa. They don't seem too pricey and are easy to put together and take down so maybe you could reuse the pieces (they have some great ones that run from $500-$1000). I often see them having 20% off for the system as well. If you have the room you should get a fluffy storage ottoman or a central dressing table for makeup, perfume and accessories. How much fun!
Definitely a vanity. And a chaise or chair so you can sit and look at all your pretty stuff This one is pretty and comes in lots of colors: www.urbanoutfitters.com/urban/catalog/productdetail.jsp;jsessionid=3D86E2151C7C04032E66C32619939E62.app12-node5?itemdescription=true&itemCount=60&id=13212600&parentid=A_FURN_FURNITURE&sortProperties=&navCount=1477&navAction=poppushpush&color= Also cute:

Hope this helps! Have fun and I'm jealous! Post pics when you're finished.
I wouldn't do anything permanent since you are planning on selling the house. You have given me a great idea. I have three bedrooms and it is just me and my husband. He uses one of the extra bedrooms for his computer/junk room and I had been using the other for my sewing room. When we first moved in, I fixed up one of the bedrooms really pretty and then the more I got into sewing I decided I needed a sewing room. After a couple of years, I hated being shut up in there so now when I want to sew I pull everything out of the closet and use the dining room table. It forces me to be neat, which my sewing room never was. Back in December, I cleaned it all out and now it is just an empty room that I was planning to turn back into a bedroom, but I have just never quite gotten around to it. I had never thought of turning it into a CLOSET. I will definitely be watching this thread and if I come up with anything I will post.

I have a chaise that will be going into the room....although I LOVE the fainting couch that FP posted so I may be using the chaise in another room and going with something like that.
I'm thinking of painting the walls a yellowish-goldish color and doing poppy colored curtains, but that may change before it's all said and done...
I'm going furniture/idea shopping this weekend...I'll be sure to post pics when it's done!

I have a dressing room and love it. I use a bookshelf for shoes and a clothing rack is handy too. I use it for my clothes for the week. I would love a chair but would have to ditch the dresser. Have fun creating your room!
