Another grammar question

I am pretty good with grammar, but I can never remember the rules for quotations at the end of a sentence.

Is this correct?

She said, "I want to go shopping now."

How about this?

She showed up at the party with her "Louis Vuitton bag".    (The preceding sentence is conveying that the bag is fake).

Punctuation is always inside quotation marks unless there's paranthetical citation, i.e. "Grammar kicks major butt" (Halleybird 29).

i think you are asking about the period being inside or outside the quotes.  in #1 i'm pretty sure you are correct -- inside quotes.

with #2, i think it should be:

She showed up at the party with her "Louis Vuitton" bag.

which i don't think answers your question, but makes the sentence more clear.  (the way you had it makes it sound like the "bag" part is in question as well as the "Louis Vuitton" part)

if the sentence were:

she showed up at the party with her "boyfriend".

i think you would be right -- period outside the quotes.

ooh, halleybird beat me to it.  an i guess i was wrong.  i bow to the grammar goddess.

Yeah, that's what I meant for the second example.  I most likely would have said "Louis Vuitton" bag as well, but I needed the quote to come at the end of the sentence and I was completely blanking out on a good example.  Although there are often situations when I ask myself the question of whether or not the period goes outside the quotes in situation #2, I just couldn't remember them.

Unless you are using the King's English, in which case (unless I am mistaken) the quotation marks go outside the period...*s*
