(this is a big one, and i'm ashamed to write it!) in general, i hate shopping. i love clothes, shoes, and accessories, but i HATE the shopping process. i hate the crowds at stores i like in NYC, i hate overbearing and/or snooty sales people, i hate standing in a dressing room with 15 pairs of pants that don't fit me, i hate the guilt i feel standing at a cash register spending money, even if it's on something i need or at a store like h&m where the purchases are by no-means budget-breaking. i do about 80% of my shopping online to avoid all of these things. even at places like banana republic, where i could easily avoid shipping charges and shop at one of the thousand b&m stores in the city, i still order things online. 5. probably about 60% of my wardrobe was gotten on ebay. definitely 90% of my accessories. 6. about 4/7 days in any given week, i leave the apartment without a single accessory other than a handbag. no necklaces, no scarves, no pins. just clothes/shoes/bag. this is also a result of my recent fashion laziness. 7. i don't own a single matching bra/undie. i have two cami/undie sets that sit in my lingerie drawer. but none of my bras and undies match at all. and i actually wear the same ratty old comfortable bra almost every day (hand-washed in the sink every evening). contrary to the girls who posted about their underthings/socks matching their outfits, i am the opposite. for example, today i am wearing grey pants, olive green socks hidden under black boots, a lilac colored sweater, pale pink bra, and blue/white striped undies. i'm like a clown under my clothes!"
Oh my gosh, smash, some of these I could have written myself (particularly, #'s 1,2,4 & 7)
*I have a ton of nice winter skirts, but I just won't wear them. It's too cold. I always end up in a sweater of some kind layered over a cami or something like that with jeans or trousers
*I don't own very much black. I don't own a pair of black pants and a few months ago I purchased my first LBD. It's still hanging in my closet with the tags on.
*I absolutely hate shopping!! I hate the mall, the parking lot, the crowds, the screaming kids. I hate trudging from store to store and trying on a ton of crap. Don't get me wrong--I love to buy things, I just hate to shop. I would rather sit around looking at catalogs or at the internet than brave the crowds at the mall.
*I haven't purchased new bra in about four years. I have hardly any matching sets and the ones that I do have, I never wear. I also never match my underwear to my outfit. The only time I worry about what color undies I'm wearing is if I'm wearing white or light colored bottoms.
*As much as I love fashion and getting dressed up, I'm happiest when I'm sitting in my house in my ratty old sweatpants and ratty old Temple University hoodie
*I hardly ever buy things on sale (this goes back to my hatred of shopping). Picking through sales racks where everything is haphazard and disheveled stresses me out. I also despise stores like Marshalls, TJMaxx and Ross. If I must shop, I like everything to be organized and categorized (and if possible, organized by color) for the easiest, most painless shopping experience.
*I am obsessively organized when it comes to my closet. Everthing is first organized by style (pants, tops, skirts, ect), then into subcategories (dressy tops, dressy pants, casual tops, ect) and finally color-coded (and not just green with green, blue with blue--we're talking organized like a rainbow, with each color fading into the next lightest to darkest--it's a little OCD, I admit, but it looks so pretty!!)
Also wanted to add, atlgirl, I can relate to the jewelry thing. I see so much great jewelry that I want to buy, but I never do b/c I hate to say no if someone asks if I made a piece.
1. I HATE outlets and and will rarely shop in one (I have to be dragged by someone else). I just don't feel that the clothes are equivalent to the clothes you would buy retail for that brand. I think some of them even have a line designed especially for outlets. Also they are not set up as aesthetically pleasing as they are in a retail store and it kind of makes the clothes look a little sad.
2. I also hate places like Marshalls/Loehmanns/TJ Maxx. I will be in Marshalls and see all this BCBG and Laundry stuff and i'll be like "this doesn't even LOOK like something BCBG or Laundry would make."
3. I actually like buying clothes that are dry clean only. When I wash stuff in the washer, it just never fits the same again. The worst for me is handwash stuff. I will just never do it. I never ever iron or handwash. Once that stuff is dirty, that's pretty much the end of it. It will sit in a pile behind my hamper for months.
4. I, like most of you, lie about the price or newness of an item.
5. If I have a good coupon, I HAVE to use it even if it means spending an hour in the store finding something.
6. I bought a Coach bag at the Coach outlet 2 years ago. One night at a party, my friend asked me where I got the bag. I replied that I got it at coach and some girl overheard me and said "That's a Coach bag? It doesn't look like one". I have not been able to carry that bag to this day even though it is cute and that girl had no idea what she was talking about. It was a Coach Hampton market tote and it was the same style they were selling in the retail locations; it just had a different print.
7. I can only really shop by myself. I don't want my friends' opinions of what I buy because they may not understand how it will be worn. I like them to see the finished product.
8. When I buy a bra I have to get matching panties, but I will rarely wear them together.
9. I feel so guilty if I try on a lot of things at a store without buying anything that I try to sneak past the saleswoman who helped me when I leave. I hate to have to answer "how did everything work out?" while I am walking out of the dressing room empty-handed. It makes me feel cheap even though nothing fit me right.
I only shop alone...the exception is when my mom won't pay unless she comes too.
I'm a lazy college student that only wears jeans & hoodies/track jackets & pumas. I have a few really great pieces but hardly ever wear them. I don't really wear trends or dress how I want b/c I live in SC & you just get looked at really funny. People would never, ever know I cared one bit about fashion by the way I always dress
1- i never, ever wear makeup, only like 2-3x a year. When I do wear it, it's brown mascara, pale taupe eyeshadow, and lipgloss.
2- i exclusively wear yoga pants, jeans, flip flops, fuggs, and hooded sweatshirts.
3- I love looking at fashion, but I don't have the self-confidence to wear any of it. Even if I buy something cute, it sits in my closet, completley unworn, until I give it to charity, a friend, or if I actually get my shit together, sell it at a used clothing store
4- i'm big and fat and I hate shopping becasue the salespeople and customers scare me because they're so much prettier and thinner than me, and I always think they're thinking what a big fat lump of shit I am. (that's not to make you feel sorry for me ro to garner attention, that's what goes on in my head from teh second I wake up to the moment I fall asleep... you could say I'm sorely lacking in self-confidence, and you'd be right!!)
5- i'm really looking forward to meeting up with Lilykind next tuesday, but i'm also really scared what she'll think of me. will she think i'm fat, ugly, and uncool? will she not want to hang out with me?
wow, this was a really negative post. I'm sorry about that, just been stressed out lately.
- I used to make secret criticisms of what other ppl were wearing, but now I've simply stopped caring. Besides, who am I to judge? I for sure have had some embarassing outfit days. What bothers me more is yucky hair. Specifically, hair length. It truly grosses me out when someone's hair is around or past waist length, and even that is pushing it IMHO. It doesn't look good on ANYONE, not even Cher.
- I love a good bargain.
- The most expensive bags I own are Coach.
- I'm secretly looking forward to working just so I can actually have my own cash to spend on nice clothes, instead of shopping with school loans but then again, I feel guilty that I am being materialistic..
- I hate it when some girls ask me where I got something and how much it was, particularly if I sense that she has an ulterior motive. For instance, I have one friend who does this all the time. I suspect she is only asking me not because she genuinely likes it, but solely to compete with me, and perhaps to feel better about herself since she likely spends more than I do on shopping.
- continuing on the negative note (haha), I also dislike it when some friends look me up and down when we first see each other. Hello, it is so obvious??
- I really admire and respect the different styles and tastes on this forum, especially the more "gutsy" ones. Although I don't think my style is quite boring, it could use a little vamping.
- One of the most important things I look out for when shopping (other than the overall style of the item) is whether the fabric will pill.
- I am sad that many of my cord jackets/blazers have been damaged by the constant rubbing of my heavy ass backpack.
- I am always going through color phases (currently, cream).
- I also go through clothing phases (currently, I'm obsessed with textured tights and fishnets).
- one more thing (I could go on and on hehe), I bought my first item of clothing from Target the other day, a cream, super-low v-necked sweater. Only $9.99!

This reminds me of another one. I'm 25 years old, but sometimes I invite my mom to go shopping in hopes that she will pay for some of my stuff. I never know until the last minute if she will though, so I will take ridiculous chances and just bring everything in the store that I want up to the counter. I still like shopping with her either way, but getting free stuff is always cool.

Those two are definitely me. I am a coupon whore. I go nuts for them. and I don't know why! (maybe because we were REALLY poor when I was a kid)
I also lie about how much I spent on something. Also, sometimes I lie about where I got something from because I don't want someone else buying the same thing.
let's see...i agree with a lot of you, primarily on this one: i have to wear dark underwear with dark clothes and light underwear with light clothes. i prefer that my bra actually match my shirt, and undies match the pants/skirt, but this is not always possible. now dark bra under a white shirt sure, but wearing a white bra under a black or dark top just makes me feel icky.
i am constantly buying 100% cashmere socks at TJMaxx. it just seems like such a good deal and such an indulgence. but then i never wear them because they make my feet incredibly hot. but i still like having them.
my fiance gave me an LV this past summer, and while it was soooo sweet of him, i feel a bit bratty about it, because it's so small. literally, my cell phone hardly fits. definitely not my wallet. as a result, i don't carry it that much, and he's always asking me about it. i do love it, but it just doesn't work for everyday. i know, i'm an ungrateful brat, and i completely understand that he wanted to get me something luxe and just because, but couldn't spend too much on it, as he was buying me a big ol' diamond ring around the same time. but still, it makes me a little sad that i can't use it very much. that is probably my big fashion confession.
and i definitely look down on people who dress badly, and everytime i do it, i yell at myself a little bit inside. i don't *want* to be so catty, really i don't.
yeah, and i still wear some of my pants too short...because there are some i usually wear with flats but occasionally really just want to wear with heels. i feel weird all day, but i've done it. also because i almost always fall in between regular and petite/short lengths, i sometimes buy the short length, because i'm too lazy to take them to be hemmed. isn't that terrible? plus i have a hard time caring some days, knowing the only people who will see me don't know any better anyway. but i know you're all cringing at the thought of me in my highwaters. however, i'm slowly trying to replace any basic pants i have that are too short with nicer ones of a more stylish length.

I do that too! Regular length jeans are usually like a half inch to short, but the long length are 3 inches too long. The last pair of long length I bought sat in my drawer waiting to me hemmed for over year. I finally just cut them w/ scissors and wore them on ultra casual days.

I guess I'm going to have to break down and reply to this one. I've loved reading the others except AJ left off my favorite one of hers. The marking sale prices on the tags. She can explain that one Ok
1. I love buying makeup but I don't wear it unless I have to. You'd never know this if you looked in my makeup drawer. And I cannot stand cheap, drugstore makeup.
2. I am overly critical and can't keep myself from saying something about strangers on the street especially those who are poor dressers or have really bad hair and/or makeup.
3. I buy stuff at TJ Maxx and Marshalls but if some one asks I refuse to tell. Its either I don't remember, I got it online, or I got it at the store you'd find the brand at.
4. I look down on people who carry knock-offs and point a knock-off out to whom ever I'm with but I carry a knock-off Kate Spade that everyone thinks is real and loves. My response... "Oh I got it in New York" if they ask where it came from. Its sorta true...my boss got it from a street vendor up there.
5. When the bf asks if something is new my response is always no I've either not worn it around him or its been hanging in my closet and I've recently rediscovered it but this is wearing thin since we are about to hit 5 years.
6. I will put things back on the rack at TJ Maxx or Marshalls because I think they are overpriced and should be cheaper there. I mean why pay $30 for a sweet pea shirt there? I held out and got it for $18 which was still bugging me.
7. I cannot stand Old Navy and will refuse to buy clothes there. I yell at the bf for buying clothes there.
8. I am a store snob. I refuse to step foot in Sears or Mervyns. I just learned that JC Pennys will not kill me. (I use to have issues walking through the women's section as a child thinking I would get fat walking through and start having anxiety attacks. I have sense stoped)
9. I cannot stand socks and shoes. I try to wear flip flop type shoes year round unless it is freezing or below freezing temperatures.
10. I seem to be able to make or help people make good outfits on here but in reality its jeans and sweaters/shirts for me most of the time. My closet sucks and I need help with it once I get my digital camera.
11. I will wear stuff 2 days in a row if I'm going to different places like church on sunday's outfit will be worn monday for work.
12. I own cashmere (from express) and don't see what the big deal is
13. I still want to get a juicy set even if they are out. I don't care I want one.
14. I like shopping by myself. I don't have patience for shopping with others especially when we are looking at stuff for them and not me. Its wasting precious shopping time.
1) I don't like shopping with my best friend because it's like a competition- it's weird. We like a lot of the same stuff, so if i like something a ton, but it's technically more "her" style, I feel like she has this claim over it. And I feel like she buys things just to spite me sometimes, like if I say I like something, she'll say, "Yea, I was just looking at it. I looooove it. I think i'm gonna buy it." it's so annoying.
2) (please don't kill me) I don't really like designer jeans anymore. I have AGs which i still love, and Sevens which i wear because they fit well and I found them for $17 at a thrift store, but I am getting sick of the same sort of pricey washes (dark, thick denim with blasting/whiskering of some sort) and labels on people butts. I hate knowing what kind of jeans people are wearing (which is partly my fault because I read so many magazines), and the trendiness factor of a lot of jeans (someone said LA hipster sheep- that's what I am starting to think of.) I LOVE jeans, but at this point, i think i'm feeling the backlash. $200 for jeans? COME ON.
1. I would rather dress sloppy than boring. Because of this I end up wearing more sweatpants than I should. I just feel better in sweats than in plain jeans and a turtleneck.
2. I don't own nearly enough nice shoes. I own really dressy shoes, and really casual shoes, but not enough daily wear in betweens.
3. My aunt got me Uggs as a present and I take back everything bad I ever said about them. I wore them for like 4 days straight after I got them. They keep the snow out and are soooo cozy.
4. I don't wear blue shoes with jeans. Too much blue.
5. On a similar note, if I'm wearing, for example, a cream top and black pants, I cannot wear black shoes. That black needs to be broken up with some pink shoes or something.
6. I just used pink as an example. I can think of one pink thing I own.
7. I also own very little black. One pair of shoes, a tank top, a t-shirt.
8. I'm incredibly cheap. Probably cause I can't afford to be anything else. But I recently discovered the joys of eBay and it's truly amazing.
9. Sometimes I like to dress fairly androgenously. I like to wear my ex's jeans, with my black f**k me heels, a girly lavender sweater, and a turquoise necklace. This is probably one of my favorite outfits. In the summer I like to wear these boys khaki cargo shorts, with a silky green halter and beaded flip flops. Also, my hiking boots are almost my favorite pair of shoes. I just like how unexpected they look (plus the ankle support!).
10. I keep my clothes on my floor and my shoes in a huge pile. I always laugh when people write about color coding thier clothes. I treat mine horribly cause I'm a slob.
11. I'm into makeup in theory, but I never wear much of it or get adventurous with it. Basically I wear mascara, eyeshadow, and blush. If it's a special occaison I'll go for lip gloss and eyeliner too. I'm a snob about makeup brands though, I really feel like you pay for what you get with makeup.

I am like that, too. The softer side of sears gives me a rash....
Yeah Nylabelle, it's a PITA because I love vintage--costume or real, though I can't afford much real--and I like other contemporary designers' work too. Usually if I am wearing a "statement" piece of jewelry by someone else, I will try to pair it with something of my own so that I can say, 'No, I didn't make this, but I did make this piece"...I just hate to flat-out say "no" because that seems to make the asker embarrassed and me feel like a meanie. Usually I'll wear others' jewelry when I am, say, out to dinner with my husband because it's unlikely that the question of "what do you do for a living?" will come up LOL
And my closet is color-coded just like yours. I read about doing that years ago and thought, "how brilliant!" and have done it ever since. Prints first, then solids, short skirts, then longer skirts, etc..and solids from light to dark colors. It sounds really anal but once it's all hanging that way, I've found it *much* easier to see what I have and keep things in order.

LOL! I totally forgot about that. I haven't done that in a while.
I used to be so paranoid about my mom raising my rent if she knew how much I spent on clothes that I used to take a red pen and cross off the price on the tag and write in 50% off or a new, lower price so it would like like I got it on sale. I would then leave the tags on until I wore it and when I did wear it, I would throw the tags out in a somewhat conspicuous way on the top of the bathroom garbage (I always get dressed in the bathroom because I feel cold if I leave the bathroom in a towel). Of course, I could have just taken the tags off and hidden them, but my mom had an idea of how much certain brand things cost, so I felt I was better off making it look like they were on sale.

Years ago when shopping with my sister she was like lets go into montgomery wards. We did and afterwards she said if I ever suggest going in there again you have my permission to slap me. Well a few months later she did so I hit her (not to hard but enough to warrent an oww!)
1. Nearly all of my sweaters are cashmere. I've been lucky to find good deals on a lot of them through Bluefly or Ann Taylor. But I have like 15 or 20. And like six of them are black.
2. I won't carry a bag that isn't designer. I don't know why, I see lots of cute bags that aren't and sometimes buy them but never carry them.
3. My closet is obsessively organized by color but I still have a pile of stuff on the trunk at the foot of my bed.
4. At the same time, I'm compulsive about keeping shoes organized in their boxes but then let them pile up next to the trunk at the foot of the bed. And then get mad at my husband when he steps on them!
5. I, too, make internal catty comments when I see people who are horribly dressed. I live for What Not to Wear and Ambush Makeover.
6. I have more blazers than anyone could ever wear, probably more than a dozen. In college, almost 10 years ago, my crowd was into wearing vintage velvet and cord blazers to go out and I've hung on to them ever since and then they became really fashionable.
7. I didn't wear shorts for a very long time, aside from boxers to sleep in. And then I bought a pair last summer and they're ok. I wear pants and skirts all summer, even on weekends.
8. And I'll only shop alone or with my mom, but she and I will split up and then meet back. She's 5'1" and shops in Talbots and petite stores and I'm 5'7", therefore not petite, and so not into Talbots.
