In my search for perfect jeans, I have run into a perplexing issue, shrinkage.
I've bought 3 pairs recently, and 2 of the 3 (from Ann Talyor Loft and BR) shrunk so much in length they are unwearable. The last pair (from ON of all places) didn't shrink hardly at all and they are the lightest-weight of the 3.
So they make most of these petite inseams 30" - I measured my BR pair last night and the inseam is currently 28.75".
I don't think I've ever had this bad of an issue before, and I've always been a machine wash/dry person (one of the reasons I don't buy really expensive jeans!). I always use a gentle cycle and cold water, and use the extra-low heat setting on the dryer.
Does anyone else have this issue? Does it seem to happen more now than it used to?

This is the exact reason I never, ever put my jeans in the dryer. Even on the gentle cycle w/the lowest heat - they always shrink in length. I recommend air drying if you don't want that to happen.
Hmmm. I have the opposite problem. Every single one of my jeans stretches out so by the end of the day they just look too big. I have to dry them on the highest setting to get their shape back!

But then they don't go back to their original shape, and come out with still slightly-baggy knees and butt. Yours don't do that?

That's the thing though - mine stretch quite a bit around, in the legs/knees/butt and are unwearable for that reason after 2 or 3 times. Drying is the only thing that seems to take them back to their original shape, but then it messes with the length!

Actually no, mine do the opposite when I air dry - they always go back to their original shape and are quite stiff actually - which means they are nice and tight everywhere again. Never baggy in the knees and butt.

Mine as well. I always have a hard time with shrinkage because I need a long inseam. I always wash in cold and air dry all my pants.

Ditto. When I wear them they stretch out, but if I dry them they shrink in length so I never dry them. They always return to their original shape when I air dry them as well.
Also I don't like to dry them because it seems to fade them quickly.

i've read if you machine dry jeans with stretch, they can actually become looser. something about it breaking some stretch fibers. i only drip-dry my jeans unless i want them to shrink in length!
I'm one of those who keeps hoping the jeans will shrink a little. Most are a half-inch to an inch too long and I hate having to hem them up a tiny bit. However, if I ever do find a pair that are just right, then they shrink.
