What do you have, style-wise, and would you recommend the store? I'm looking for all new furniture for our new living room and I'm completely overwhelmed. I haven't looked for new furniture statestide in so long I don't know which chain stores are good/bad. Please give me some input on experiences you've had with any store (mid $$ range).
Thanks!
P.S., my style is sort of eclectic ( a lot of European antiques and reproductions with bits of traditional and French Country. I like a homey/cozy feel and am not into modern).
Well, I don't have a living room in my house since it was built in 1954, but I bought our family room stuff from overstock.com. I got our couch there. It is a tweed looking fabric, but it doesn't feel like tweed. I also found 2 chairs a pier 1 that I really like. Good Luck!
PS. After reading more about your style, it sounded to me like Anthroplogie may have some nice stuff you may like. It can be a bit expensive though. Depending on where you live, you may be able to find some cool stuff at antique shops, or consignment stores in your area? Just some ideas!

Overstock, huh? I've seen so many pieces there that I like online, but I'm afraid to bite the bullet and take the chance. I've heard it's very expensive to return. Have you ever had to?
Good post. I'm moving into my own place in a few weeks and I'm going to need furniture (roommates had living room furniture before). I've been looking at overstock.com too and wondered about returns, quality, etc.
I've bought from Overstock before. Nothing bigger than a leather bench/ottoman. But they have reviews if your worried. I also like Ashley furniture and Pier 1.
I just recently purchased a house and needed to buy furniture for every room. The best experiences I had were at Kane's Furniture, American Signature, and Furniture Country. I wouldn't recommend Rooms To Go. I thought the quality was questionable.
I like pier one a lot, and their quality is good. I've had a lot of luck with a local place, so you might want to check out places around you. I recently bought new bedroom and dining room sets from them, and am having a new sofa and loveseat delivered in about 2 weeks. I've been very pleased with them so far, plus the prices are great and the warrantee is excellent.
My old sofa set is from Jennifer Leathers and it. is. complete. crap. I dont' reccomend them at all. The set is 3 years old and isn't even worth donating. Plus, we I ordered it, it took a full 2 months AFTER my expected delivery date to get it. So I was couchless for 3 months. Not cool.

I'm going to check out Pier 1 today. I forgot about them. Their year end clearance is usually pretty good... wonder if there's anything left! I'm going to check local stores after I move, but I want to shop the chains that are here (Phoenix) and there (AlaBAMA), so I can get a head start. It takes me forever to pick out furniture, so I'm going to do some now before my husband gets home so he's not breathing down my neck and harassing me to make a choice! He's not a shopper =(.
I have the same taste as you so here is some of the places I have bought furniture:
Ikea (great PB coppies of sofa's and chairs etc) Costco (good for wood pieces , beds etc) ballarddesign.com (love everthing) urbanoutfitters.com (makes some great vintage furniture for 1/10 that anthro sells it for!) ebay! ( I love finding pottery barn pieces on ebay- there always great deals!) zgallerie (some of there items are modern but they occasionally make a great antique item and the prices are really reasonable) worldmarket.com ( I love the antique black furniture they do, and the prices are LOW)
Have you looked at Crate and Barrel? It's not terribly expensive (although I'm not a huge furniture buyer so maybe it is?) but they have some good, solid pieces. I would never buy a whole room of furniture from them, because it would be too overwhelming but mixing and matching some of their pieces would probably suit most tastes.
I love Anthro for furniture as well but it's waaay too pricey. My parents just bought a new set of furniture from Lane Furniture. I don't know if it's a local or nationwide chain but the couch and loveseat they bought are awesome and of great quality. I can't vouch for anything other than the one set they bought though.
Living room is a work-in-progress. The couch and ottoman here
were custom-made through a local mom and pop furniture store. It was about $2K for both pieces and they're exactly what we wanted. The sofa is lime velvet and the stripe fabric has a pretty sheen.
In the family room, this couch and loveseat are from Macy's
I would buy furniture again from Macy's in a heartbeat. When these were delivered there was a scratch on the wood leg, and they replaced BOTH pieces within a week. However, I would never buy this particular sofa again. It's not that comfortable and ultrasuede is crap. I can't wait to recover it.
Target, Craigslist, IKEA and Wickes Furniture. We're on a student's budget. However, I think our place looks pretty good, we've come across some awesome deals and met some people on Craigslist selling like new stuff cuz they're relocating and need to sell fast.
JCPenney's actually has really nice furniture. I am a C&B addict - our living room couch, chair and ottoman and entertainment unit are from there, but each is a different style (I hate sets).
I like to look at Room and Board for ideas. I don't think I could buy a couch online, but we just bought dining room chairs there and LOVE them.
I also like CB2 and West Elm for inexpensive accessories.
Friends have bought really nice things at Norwalk and American Home Furnishings, which I think are national chains.
We just bought and moved into our first house in July, so we've been on furtniture shopping overload! I'm not sure how over-budget this may be for you, but we have had a lot of success with Ethan Allen. We furnished our bedroom with them, and recently just ordered our living room and dining room furniture through them. We also have gotten a couple accent tables, rugs, and a bunch of wall art/sculpures, etc. It's definitely not cheap, but their non-custom furniture is not unreasonably priced (but you do wind up paying a bit more for their custom stuff). You also get hooked up with a designer free of charge. My main complaint is that because they make everything to order, you wind up waiting months for your furniture to arrive. I think it's worth it though.
I also agree with blubirde on Crate & Barrel furniture. We got our kitchen table and chairs and also an accent table from there and are super happy with them. They have some very cute stuff (including living room furniture) and the quality is great.
For our family room, we ordered furniture from Raymour and Flannigan, and we love it! We ordered this amazing leather sectional (it's actually called a cuddler). Here is a picture of it:
It is gorgeous in person and so comfy. Our designer from Ethan Allen was fawning over it! We also got our coffee table, end table, and entertainment console from there. We also got a leather couch and ottoman for our office there. Overall, we have been very happy with the appearance, comfort, and quality of the furniture we got there, and the prices are definitely reasonable.
We have gotten a couple throw rugs and a side table from Pottery Barn, which we have been happy with. I've heard mixed reviews on their furniture though.
My sister and her husband got their living room furniture from Ashley furniture, and they are thrilled with it. The furniture you buy from there is what is on the floor, so that is how they keep the price of their furniture down.
I hope this is helpful. I understand how overwhelming it can be looking for furniture...when we first started looking I had no idea where to start! It can be fun though...enjoy!!!!
ETA: by the way, Suasoria, your living room looks gorgeous. Great job with the decorating!
Thanks Mitz! I need to repaint part of it badly. The lime couch does NOT go well with the golden tan wall behind it. The other walls are olive green. The ottoman is in shades of lime, olive, black, gold, and two shades of salmon. So DH says, "what about pink?" Gotta love a man who thinks pink. Our guest bathroom is already pink and I want to redo it, so if I can get that back to green tea like it was before (which I preferred), then maybe we'll do salmon or coral in the living room along with the olive that's already there.
Thanks, girls. I'm going to spend this afternoon shopping online, and then head over to some of the major stores in town and I'll post what I find! I can't wait!
I havent had to return at overstock. It was a big risk, but I could not live without this couch. I read the reviews about the couch closely, and thought about it for a long time. The bad part about it was that the delivery man wasnt allowed to come inside to unpack the couch. I was like..... um...... what?!? It worked out ok, but I wasnt exactly pleased.
