Do you hold onto clothes/accesories for ever or do you get rid of them as soon as they don't fit or are no longer in style?

And to answer my own poll...I'm the basement full girl...I tend to hold onto things so long as they are still in good shape, because I fear that the day will come when I'll want them again!

If it doesn't fit, I get rid of it. I'm picky about fit so as soon as I put something on and realize it doesn't fit how I want it to, I throw it in the "goodwill" box in my closet. If it's worn out and something that's not worth keeping (e.g. a worn out t-shirt is okay for cleaning my house but a worn-out evening skirt doesn't really have any other use) I toss it. I usually keep accessories forever and ever. They feel less "trendy" to me and rarely wear out.

If I start not wearing something just because it's not "fashionable" anymore, it takes me a long time to get rid of it. Thankfully, I don't do really trendy stuff hardly ever, so usually things wear out long before I have to think about getting rid of them just because they aren't "in."

I don't have a lot of closet space so if I find that I haven't worn something for that season I give it to Goodwill instead of hanging on to it because I probably won't wear it again anyways.

I have a few vintage or unique items that I keep around (but don't necessarily wear), but otherwise I'm a ruthless tosser.  My style/situation has changed quite frequently in the last few years so there's been a pretty high turnover rate in my closet, with only the most high quality and best fitting items able to hold their places.  I'm trying to focus my purchasing these days on things that can be dressed up or down and basics, hoping that if I bring more versatile things I'll have to throw out less!

Having too many things in my closet stresses me out, so the process of taking inventory, purging, and reorganizing keeps things in check.  And provides a nice tax deduction wink.gif.

I'm kind of both.  I tend to hold on to things for awhile even if I never wear it "just in case" (especially if they were expensive).  Then, every once in awhile, I go through my closet and force myself to get rid of those things I never wear and donate them.

I hold on to things because I tend to feel guilty throwing stuff out that I haven't worn very much.

I have become ruthless lately.  I still keep some stupid stuff, but not as much as I used to.

This post was a helpful reminder that I need to give my closet a good cleaning. I hold onto articles of clothing that may be a favorite piece, or sentimental value. I also have a bad habit of holding onto my "back in the skinny day" clothes, I keep telling myself that once I lose weight I can wear them again.

I'm w/Ladysi78250 - I NEED to take ALL OF MY CLOTHES (and shoes) out of my closets, and what I haven't worn/can't fit anymore/whatever reason - goes to family, or to Goodwill. I have a BADDD habit of holding on to things, for 'when' I lose weight, or 'maybe it'll come back in style', etc. Time to 'move on', and if I lose weight, well.... Why hold on to 'old clothes'....LOL

I'm the same way. I'm forcing myself to be less of a packrat though.

I'm a tosser. I get stressed if I have stuff sitting around that I can't/don't wear. I read somewhere once "You already piad for it once. Why pay for it twice by letting it take up valuable closet space." <<Something like that.

Tosser, mostly because I share a closet with BF and don't have the space to be a keeper.

keeper. I'm trying to change that though. I've come to the realization that half of what's in my closet hasn't been worn in years! So much of it is just way too young looking for me anymore (ie abercrombie stuff from college). I've slowly been purging, but its hard for me to get rid of things that I like in general, even if i don't like them for *me* anymore.

Mostly a keeper. I have a portable closet in the garage with good-quality items I may get use out of again if I suddenly become a size 4 or 6, and vintage items, and some things I've kept for sentimental reasons. My tastes don't change much with trends/styles so I don't have a lot of things that feel outdated. I'm far more likely to get rid of gifts I never liked and things that are wearing out.

That said, I did a major purge last summer (2006, I should say) and probably got rid of a third of my clothes. I've got a box of discards in the closet I'd like to get rid of soon.

I'm a total keeper. The second I throw something away or give it away, I find a way to incorporate it into my wardrobe and wonder where it is. I seriously cannot bear to get rid of clothes that I love. And I love almost everything I own. It's a sickness. It goes back to growing up poor and not being able to buy a lot of clothes, even though I always felt my life would be complete if I could just have all the clothes I wanted. smile.gif

As a result, quantity makes me exceedingly happy. Luckily I have a big closet so space isn't a huge issue for me. Every once in awhile I throw away piles of jeans or black pants or white tank tops (my past obsessions that I'm over now). But generally speaking I keep almost everything. And I have no desire to change it. I'm not a clutter bug in other areas (unless books count), but I have zero interest in getting rid of anything. I love standing in my closet and seeing all the shelves and racks filled with potential choices. It's a satisfying love.

I'm a keeper I think... I always hold on to clothes that don't fit. I gain/lose weight alot (or at least I have lately) and I have rollercoastered up and down between 4 different sizes. :(

When I moved I threw out a lot but I still stock half of my closet with pieces that I hope to "one day" fit into.

Tosser! I've become increasingly obsessed with winnowing my wardrobe down to only things I love and that look great on me. It's a great feeling to look into my closet and see nothing but stuff I'm really happy to have. The things that bum me out are the serviceable basics I don't love, but can't yet afford to replace with better-quality and better-looking pieces. And I do have a few "just in case" things I keep hanging around, basically in case of drastic laundry crisis. smile
