Westboro Baptist Church is ordered to pay millions in damages to the family of a soldier who was killed in Iraq. I watched the "church's" founder on CNN this morning, and he was completely unapologetic, and plans on appealing the decision.
I'm really happy that they lost. These people make me so angry. How anyone could protest at the funeral of a fallen soldier is beyond my comprehension.
Yeah, its not just protesting. They say really terrible things. I understand that free speech is protected, but to say "soldiers die because god hates fags" at a funeral is incomprehensible.
holy crap. I have a weird fascination with these people, I've watched everything I can find on them. Everything they say is just so beyond me. Anyway, I'm thrilled that they lost!

I saw them in action maybe a decade ago. They were protesting a rabbi who had stated gays were welcome in his synagogue and there was a counter-protest. I heard a little girl (maybe six-eight years old) screaming horrific things about "fags" and hell. I don't know if she was Phelps' daughter or what, but it was disturbing. They also had posters with famous gay people on them and 666 and Die! written on their faces, like Greg Louganis, etc. One, though, was of Bob Dole.
A friend of mine was shot down protecting ground troops in Iraq a year ago. He died on impact. These bastards threatened to picket his huge memorial service out here in Phoenix. A group of bikers (there were a LOT of them, and I can't remember the name of their group) came to the church and surrounded the entrances on their bikes basically ready to kick the ass of anyone who tried to trespass and/or protest. I think they drive around to high profile memorial services that Westboro is planning to attend. It was a cool thing to see.

i half-wish the westboro people were sentenced to prison, so they could be on the receiving end of some jail lovin'. horrible, yes, but if there's anyone deserving of it...

I think the Patriot Guard Riders are awesome. I'm so glad they're out there to counteract the protests.
I want to know where the Westboro people get their money. How do they spend all their time traveling around to spread their bigotry? They can't have jobs. It makes me sick to think that people might actually donate money to them.
seriously, eff fred phelps and crew. i am glad they were fined. i can't imagine how awful it would be to go to a funeral of a loved one only to find these assholes.
