Handbag advice - Balenciaga?
Permalink Closed

Lately, I've been considering buying a Balenciaga motorcycle bag.  I'm looking at the First or the Twiggy, since the City looks like it would be huge on me (I'm 5"4 on a good day wink.gif).  It would be the most I've ever spent on a bag, though.  I want to get it in a neutral, since it's an expensive purchase.  I was thinking of the steel (plomb).  My question is, is this bag too trendy to spend that much money on?  Will I be able to use it as a casual bag for years, or will it look dated in a few years? TIA!

The Balenciaga motorcycle bags are amazing and I wish that I had one! I think you could wear one for years. However, to me they are really the biggest IT bag of at least the last five years and really associated with Nicole Richie et al time period. So if what you're looking for is a super classic casual investment bag to buy for the future, perhaps this is not the best one anymore.

But if you love it, you'll love it every time you wear it and I think you should go for it!

I love, love, love that bag and plan to add one to my collection in the future. I think with a bag like that, it's important that YOU love it no matter what...when I get one, I won't care if it was a a huge trend in 2005 or whatever. I actually want one in some bold, luscious color, since they are available in such a range. But then I have a lot of basic color bags already.

I think a steel color would be a great neutral. DH bought me the Ferragamo Marisa in pewter this summer, and I can carry it with so many things. I like it even better than a black bag.

I still beat myself up over the fact that I passed up a Twiggy in black in summer 2005. I was on the phone with the Barney's SA and I just couldn't bring myself to put it on hold. hmm

I think that if you love the bag enough, you will use it regardless of its "IT bag" status. I feel like they are very much of the moment, but that has been the case for so many years now.

Don't throw rocks- but I think i'm the only person on the planet that isn't crazy about this bag.
I think the leather looks kind of shiny and/or papery and there are too many bells and whistles for me.
So to answer the question, no, I wouldn't spend my money on this bag.  I think there are other bags (Miu Miu, Chloe, Marni, Chanel, Gucci..etc) that look nicer.  But if you LOVE it, go for it!

lynnie isn't the only one.  Maybe I'm just bored with them but I actually can't remember ever really loving this bag.  But if you love it and have loved it for a long time then you'll probably continue to love it for years to come and at some point down the road the bag will be cool and vintage rather than trendy and dated.  I'd say if you've loved it for around a year and it isn't going to be a financial hardship then get it.

That's a pretty good guideline when deciding on a bag.

I agree with what others have said about get it if you love it even though it has been an "It" bag. Keep in mind the motorcycle line has been around since 2000 or 2001 (can't remember), so it's not like it's some new design that will fade away next year.

I have two Balenciaga motorcycle bags, so obviously I like them. One warning about the Twiggy though: when worn by the shoulder strap, the middle of the bag can "sink" down and it has a fortune cookie effect. This bugs some people.

For what it's worth, I don't think the City would be huge on you. I've seen women your size carrying them and it doesn't look awkward IMO.

Anyway, if you have any questions PM me.
