DH and I have had ups and downs in our income in the past 8 years.  We never had a set agreement, as the amount to spend on a shopping trip usually depended on what we were making at the time.

If I want to spend $200-300 on myself all in one place, I talk to him about it first because if I just tell him afterwards...even if we had plenty of money in the bank, he will FREAK out and it's just not worth the trouble.  I usually warn him weeks ahead of time, saying, "I need to buy shoes or I need to buy a coat this month."  We'll agree on a price range and then I will just buy it whenever I want to.

It's hard to have a set agreement when our income fluxuates, but it is especially hard for me because my husband thinks EVERYTHING is overpriced anyway.

i'm not married, but the only way i'd personally feel comfortable is with a private account in addition to a joint one. That way I could just budget myself for my purchases. Unless I marry a somewhat stylish guy, I cant imagine trying to explain the cost of a lot of the things I buy...

Same here. I'm not married, but my some of my friends always ask me how much my things cost and why I would spend so much, and I hate having to explain my purchases.
