I was at DSW and saw all these adorable shoes, and then thought, "what would I wear those with??" Do you ever buy shoes first and then clothes to match? Or do you only buy shoes that go with outfits you already own?
Hm, I tend to kind of just buy shoes--but then again I'm a major shoe girl! I rarely have specific outfit ideas in mind, mostly I'll just see something gorgeous that I like. I've always found that most shoes can work with a lot of different things. Especially colored shoes, they look so amazing with neutral outfits!
I just buy them and deal with the consequences later. Sometimes I'll have something specific in mind, but then I can't ever find exactly what I'm looking for. The other day I went searching for chocolate brown dressy flats, but I bought black satin shoes with polka dots instead.
I agree with sephorablue, most shoes look good with neutrals. Whenever I'm lusting after a crazy pair of shoes but don't know what I'll wear them with, my fellow shoe obsessed friend (and best enabler) always says "You can wear them with jeans!" I think that's true most of the time.
I buy shoes I love, and then work my outfits around them. I can never find the right shoe when I already have an outfit made that "just needs" shoes. I'm drawn to a lot of the same color combinations, so usually the shoes I like will work with my wardrobe, even if I don't have a specific plan when I buy them.

It can be so fun to go the shoes-first route. THere are so many inspiring designs! Many times, it's the shoe that "makes" a look. It makes sense than some might start there and just let the rest of the pieces fall in.
I just buy them and deal with the consequences later.
Ditto - for both clothes and shoes! I mean, sometimes I'll set out specifically to get black pumps, or flat boots, whatever. But most of the time, I just go shoe shopping for fun and clothes shopping for fun and somehow they end up working well together...usually. I agree that usually they can at least go with jeans!

I buy the shoes and worry about the clothes later. Very rarely do I have an outfit without a few good shoe options. I have quite a few shoe styles in basic colors, and then a bunch of fun shoes that I will build an outfit around.
If I find a pair of shoes I love, I'll buy them and figure out something to wear with them. I don't mind spending a lot on shoes and only wearing them a few times/year. Over the life of the shoe, they always get plenty of wear. Right now, I'm at a job were heals just don't work because I'm out walking in the woods a lot, but I still can't stop buying heels that are completely impractical for my current lifestyle. It's a little different than how I view clothes; I usually don't buy clothes that I can't work into my wardrobe right away.
I have definitely bought shoes and built outfits around them. But as I mentally go through my collection right now, I am realizing that I don't have any wildly patterned or detailed shoes that would be hard to dress around.
I do buy lots of shoes that others may not consider neutrals like leopard print, red, pink, metallics, snakeskin but they really do go with everything.
