Big changes are happening at pier1.com: A bold new look and, perhaps most notably, the elimination of our online store. So what are we thinking?
Pier 1 takes pride in offering an ever-changing array of unique décor from around the world. Our products are typically handmadenot cranked out on an assembly lineand were constantly seeking the new and unusual. What that means is continually fresh surprises for our customers in more than 1,000 stores across the country. Thats good. But it also makes keeping a consistent online inventory uncertain.
Youve probably visited other websites that seem to have a lot but end up having much thats not available. Thats bad. And thats something we dont want our customers to experience; therefore, starting September 1, 2007, pier1.com will no longer offer online purchasing. Youll still be able to view products online and in our catalogs. And nothing has changed about the satisfaction of walking into a Pier 1 store and walking out with treasures in hand. No hassles, no waiting.
So thanks for shopping Pier 1 Imports. We hope youll keep coming back.
I've never shopped online with Pier 1, but it seems like a step backwards to me. Shopping online is a growing trend and more stores are offering the convenient option to its customers, it seems odd that such a popular store would not offer it.
I totally agree, BargainQueen. Their "we don't crank-out merchandise" explanation didn't really cut it with me. When I think of Pier One, I don't think of lovingly handmade goods from exotic locales. It'll be interesting to see what happens.
Their sales have been sagging for several consecutive years, so this is probably a (foolish) last ditch effort to cut costs. I figure they'll eventually fold/get bought out.
I noticed it a few weeks ago and was slightly annoyed. I never purchased from them online before, but it's nice to know it's there if I need it and can see what they have. Now only a handful of products are viewable.
It's a stupid decision. Even if you can't sell everything on your web site, you should sell some things, if nothing else as a teaser to get people into the physical stores.
Yeah, PJ - it's all mass produced anyway. My guess is they wanted to cut costs by not managing a central warehouse and staff to fulfill online orders.
They tried to change their catalog image over the last year to be a West Elm copycat, and I don't think it's working. Now they have no identity and if they go away, I won't miss them.
I just went to their website and saw this for the first time. What crap. I could pull out any number of Pier 1 things in my house and point to the "made in some 3rd world country" label on the bottm. Handmade my ass.
I haven't stepped inside a Pier 1 in ages. The one close to my house closed so now it's a hassle to go there. I used to buy xmas ornaments from them every year but in the last few years their selection has seriously disappointed. I also always used to buy candles there but lately the selection has decreased. I used the website to decide if I wanted to go in store. It doesn't really matter if anyone buys - it's the advertising quality that counts. Now it just blows. Ugh.
