is there such a thing as "instant grass?"/dog problem

My dog has had the same very large, grassy yard her whole life (she's 9 years old) at my parents' house. The past couple years, I could only afford apartments that didn't allow pets, and she stayed at my parents' house. Well, I moved into a new house a month ago and yesterday we *finally* finished her fence and she officially came to live with me for good.

Yay! Except for one thing. Her new fence just has dirt and sand in it. I wanted to plant some stuff for spring, but figured she'd just have to live with a less-than-beautiful yard until everything started growing again. Except, I think she doesn't understand that she's allowed to poop on the sand!!! Last night she peed in her new fence and I told her how great that was, but she has yet to poop in there. And I don't think she likes peeing in there, either - the fence isn't connected to anywhere by a door, so when I bring her inside I put her a on a leash and walk her to the door. And she always stops to pee in my garden. She just wiped her nasty ass all over my carpet and left a faint brown stain (ewwww, I know) so I feel like she must really have to go to the bathroom, but when I took her out (even to a grassy area) she didn't do anything.

*anyway* I'm afraid that she doesn't understand she's allowed to poop in her sandy/dirty new pen because there's no grass in it. And I don't want her to keep holding it and finally give up right in the middle of my house, you know? Is there anything such as instant grass (besides astroturf)? I know they make things you can roll out and water that grow flowers, does anyone know if there's something like that, but with grass, I could buy at a home/garden store? I do not want to be on poop patrol until the spring!bleh

I wonder if there is a nursery anywhere nearby that installs sod. It is probably difficult to find, but maybe they'd let you buy just a couple rolls of sod to lay down (you'd have to care for them so they don't just die). Or, you could have your yard sodded if it's yours to maintain/do. I don't know. How long does it take for wheatgrass to grow? Just throwin out ideas.

Sod isn't expensive, usually less than a buck a square foot. It comes in strips and you lay it just like carpet. If your soil isn't great, you may want to spread out a layer of topsoil or compost first. There are different varieties of grass depending on whether you have mostly sun or mostly shade and what your winters are like.

Measure the area, calculate the square footage, and call a few nurseries to find out what varieties would be best for your site. Most places will deliver but if you have access to a pickup you can save some money getting it yourself.

You and a couple of friends can do this yourself in an afternoon. The hardest part of the whole project is keeping it from drying out for the first month or so, which is why this time of year isn't the best for laying sod. But if you just want a small area sodded, a long hose and a sprinkler head should be fine.

The mowing part kind of sucks, too.

Here's some brief info, but there's probably many more -

thanks! honestly, I know ZILCH about gardening but I thought I had heard of something like this once, and when I asked several people this question they looked at my like I was crazy. So it's good to know I'm not... tonight I'll be sod shopping!
