Let's do a nostalgia poll! What was your favorite first day of school outfit ever?
I have two.
1989 (5th grade): I spent my entire school allowance on this from some stupid boutique: greenish Hammer-style pants with a pattern of little red roses, red short-sleeved top with two black shiny buttons at the top, and a black blazer. ALL RAYON. Don't be jealous. I think I wore it with black sandals.
1995 (10th grade): I think this was from JCPenney or Mervyn's, LOL. Burgundy/black pleated, plaid miniskirt with 2 buckles at the hip, burgundy s/s turtleneck sweater, and black, high-wedge loafers. I was so Clueless (minus the knee socks).

i can't remember that many of them, but in 8th grade i wore a black tank dress with a plaid blazer over it. in 10th i wore sailor jeans and some random top.
I remember always wanting to wear something new, but my high school was unair-conditioned and late August in Nebraska is wretchedly hot and humid, so I always ended up in a t-shirt and shorts or a skirt. Normally, the first month would be unbearable so no one really cared what they looked like. We would have lots of half days because of the heat. The first cool day was always the day you saw all the back to school gear. I remember one outfit in 1990 was a purple long sleeve dress with a corsetted back. I wore black opaque tights and a pair of black suede platform sandals. I loved those shoes. Sounds kind of goth, but it wasn't. I was more hippie at that age. I remember how excited I would get when it got cool enough for tights. I had all sorts of patterns and textures (like black and white stripes) and I loved wearing them under jean shorts, skirts, dresses, etc.
I do remember my first day of 7th grade (1988) at my airconditioned junior high. I wore a white miniskirt with a navy long sleeve t-shirt (possibly a mock turtleneck) and keds.

Halleybird, PLEASE don't tell me you were living in Arizona when you wore the turtleneck on the first day of school!

haha, yes. It was short-sleeved and very thin, though!

The only one I can recall was 7th or 8th grade - a black/white striped miniskirt, a baggy red Perry Ellis tee from a thrift store, and black fabric mary janes. I remember it because one of my friends had the same skirt so I positively had to wear it to school first -- otherwise people might think I was copying her instead of vice-versa.
I do remember my kindergraten outfit, which was a denim jumper with little pink plastic hearts over a white tee. I loved that denim jumper.
I remember my first day of HS outfits for both 9th and 10th grade because I wore a uniform. It was pretty fabulous. The polo and sweater was emblazoned with my school's name. I didn't get to wear the sweater until October so my first day outfit was usually. or
(rolled up to midthigh, of course)
and these FUG Steve Madden oxfords with chunky heels. I couldn't quit HS fast enough.
A few I remember. At least I think I remember correctly. Whatever I wore on the first day was a favorite!
1st grade (1988) - Sweatsuit with panda screen print.
3rd grade (1990) - Pink cotton overall thing. Very hard to explain. Very ugly. I think it had some polka dots on it.
9th grade (1996) - Denim overalls that had plaid pockets. I think that was the same year I had an ugly black Reebok backpack.
11th grade (1998) - Grey Old Navy logo t-shirt. (The summer before school started Old Navy had just opened a store here. Half the students were wearing those shirts!)
12th grade (1999) - Calvin Klein jeans, Nike shoes, Roxy pineapple tee, Roxy messenger bag. (That year I had a summer job so I was able to buy some better stuff than past years).
I always wore a uniform. For a school uniform, ours was pretty cute and classic. White peter pan collar blouse, khaki or gray wool pleated skirt, navy sweater (if you wanted) and leather closed toe shoes of your choice... I always went bare-legged and wore ox-blood penny loafers.
My first day of college is still immortalized on my student ID. I wore head to toe J. Crew... navy tee, khaki skirt, beaded necklace, and these shoes that were clogs but looks like penny loafers on the top. EERILY similar to my uniform.
OMG I remember my first day of Freshman year outfit because I thought I was so cool and people stared at me like I was crazy!
Green combat boots, biker shorts under a sheer flowered skirt and a baby T with a red heart on it. I loved this outfit and carried it with my Esprit school bag.

I can't remember any but partially the last one of them all...
12th grade 1999: Platform Skechers sneakers! They were white with light blue trim. Gave me some height! Probably with Mudd jeans and my beloved baby blue Roxy messenger bag. The top I'm not positive but it may have been those baseball style tees with a 3/4 sleeve in baby blue with white sleeves. I think this is the outfit I have in my senior pictures.
The only one I remember (other than the grade school uniform) is the summer after my first boyfriend and I broke up and I wanted to show him how hot I'd become over the summer! lol
We had a strict (business-y) dress code in high school, so I wore a pink button-up shirt, the shortest black skirt I could get away with, fishnets, and some huge ugly clunky high-heeled bootie things (the best current term I can think of to describe them). I thought I was hot shit. Also, fishnets aren't quite as skanky as it would seem... we were required to wear pantyhose so I kind of made a name for myself wearing the craziest ones I could find. But since high school I've realized how badly I judged the fit of many shirts I wore back then... I won't even wear that pink shirt now (it is miraculously still in good condition and still in my closet) because it's too baggy, and I am 20lbs heavier now! Also, I've seen the dress code since I graduated and it specifically mentions that you can't wear anything other than solid, natural colored pantyhose. I feel as if I've made my mark

There's a picture of me on my very first day of 1st grade, but I honestly can't remember what I was wearing. I think there was a lot of denim involved.
i honestly can't really remember any of my outfits.
hmm, I don't remember putting in effort on first days of school because for 75% of my schooling, I was in private school with uniforms. my effort instead went to makeup, hair and earrings. And this was the early 90's, so the bigger the earrings, the better!
it just occurred to me that school uniforms may be the reason I was a late bloomer when it came to fashion and outfit coordinating. bummer!
ONE big item that stands out to me though...those flap-over-top jeans in the late 80's. I remember buying a pair for "free dress day," (which for us private schoolers, was probably about as cool as the first day of school) in 1988.

My first day of middle school is the only one I can remember. It was 1992 and I wore flower-printed white denim shorts, an aqua t-shirt with the sleeves cuffed, some sort of headband, and probably either Keds or Converse. I thought I was stylin.

I came, I saw, I did a little shopping.
I don't remember any particular outfits, but I remember a particular pair of shoes. Shoes were EXTREMELY important at the schools I went to. I remember for a time you absolutely had to have Reebok classics, and I think these were still the rage around the time I remember this...
I want to say it was the first day of school in in 1990 (8th grade for me). That summer, they were promoting a new shoe, Side 1. Anyway, I thought this was going to be the hottest new item of the year and I wanted to be cutting edge and get a pair. They were a little hard to find, but I was super psyched to get them and be among the coolest since I had them.
Haha.
I was literally the only person in school that had a pair of these shoes and everyone thought they were totally lame. I was super heart broken and just plain sad, because these were my shoes, and we only got one new pair a year. I actually got a new pair at Christmas because I hated my Side 1's after realizing they weren't cool after all. Now, I would totally wear whatever shoe I liked... ah, those unsure/insecure grade school days...
Drew - that Side 1 story sounds horribly traumatizing!!
I always wore uniforms, but we didn't have to the first and last weeks of the year.
I remember wearing my new Gloria Vanderbilt jeans on the first day of third grade. I idolized Blair from Facts of Life so I paired them with a brown corduroy blazer and shirt with a ribbon bow.
In junior high, I wore my beloved Guess jeans that zipped at the ankles with two Esprit shirts layered and a wrist full of rubber bracelets.
I don't remember any of my high school outfits (probably repressed those memories because they were so hideous), but I do remember the red Liz Claiborne purse I got for my first day as a freshman. It was leather and covered with her triangle logo.
OMG! Great poll! Mine was not actually a first-day-of-school outfit--I went to a private school and we had uniforms. But this was the outfit I wore when we left for our big exciting overnight field trip to the Big City (Philadelphia!!!) in seventh grade (1990). I had high hopes of getting to sit next to the boy I liked on the bus, so I was dressed appropriately in:
-A red felt bowler-type hat
-a giant hoop earring in one ear only, because my right ear piercing had closed up and in my infinite wisdom I hadn't considered it a priority to re-pierce it
-a red cotton turtleneck
-giant, oversized, bright purple cardigan that I was absolutely swimming in (it was my mother's, and I was a scrawny 11-year-old)
-stone washed black jeans
-the coup de grace, a pair of bright red suede cowboy boots.
