This comment won't win me any friends, but tattoos always struck me as rather "white trash." It's just hard for me to picture them being elegant or upscale.

hahaha..Suasoria...I think the first words out of my mouth after i got mine was "I can't believe I'm really tattooed white trash." And let me tell you, i was at a water park this weekend...oh.my.lord.....i don't know what some people were thinking...I'm pretty sure I saw 13 year olds running around with suns and dolphins and everything else tattooed on their belly buttons and lower backs...it was crazy...i totally called all of them white trash...and then my sister reminded me of my little secret tattoo...dang.

This is something I have been thinking about a LOT lately.

Right now I am really obsessed with wrist tattoos and I want one really badly. I want to get the word Cheers inked on my wrist because it reminds me of Glasgow (I spent a semester there and it was the best decision of my life). I can't pull the trigger though (yet), mainly because that is a highly visible area and some day I'll have to cover it up EVERY day when I have a job. I think by then I would regret it. So I am back to the drawing board, maybe I'll get it in a different area.

My friend is getting a tattoo on her wrist on Thursday. I'm jealous!

Does anyone here have a wrist tattoo? Do you regret it? How do you cover it up for work?

I have a friend who has a wrist tattoo in white so you can't really see it but she knows it's here, it's actually pretty cool. It's a thought at least and easier to cover up than black.

Ooh, I never even thought of that! Thanks for the idea - I think I saw some celebrity with a white tattoo, and if it hadn't been pointed out that they had one, I would have never noticed. Maybe now I won't have to get it elsewhere, since I really love wrist tattoos. I am going to get one (if I do, and it's probably inevitable) on my left wrist, where I wear my watch. A white tattoo + a watch = no one will notice. Good idea - thanks Collette!

The only tattoo I know I would love forever and ever would be my last name. I know I'd want it somewhere like my wrist - this sounds dumb but I think it's because there are veins you can see on your wrist and then it would be highlighting my [last name here] blood. Especially since I know I'll change my name when I get married.

-but- of course I'd want that out of love and loyalty to my family, and my father is vehemently opposed to tattoos. So that would kind of defeat the purpose

I have lots.
-An Aries symbol in my left arm

-an Egyptian ankh on my right shoulder, symbolizing life
-a dragon on my back, for my brother, who was born in the year of the dragon
-a sun on my lower back, the only one of my tattoos I'm not completely crazy about. I was once young and stupid.
-my newest one is a koi, symbolizing perseverance and over-coming obstacles

Two USMC ones, similar to the reasons Collette got hers in the Army. I have toyed with getting another one, but I can't think of any I really would want.

I have a large floral piece on my back. It's special because the artist is a good family friend and he's so creative and awesome and I love that I have something he created just for me. Also, it was a present from my husband for our one year anniversary (haha, could I sound any more "white trash?"), so no matter what happens, it will always remind me of that time in my life and how happy I was, without it being blatantly about him.

I hope to get something else this fall. Probably a cherry blossom tree. I lived in Japan for a couple of years, and while I was there I learned so much about who I am and what I want from life. To the Japanese cherry blossoms are symbolic of the brevity of life, which really coincides with what I got out of my time there.

This is a fascinating discussion! I don't have any, and don't want any. Though I have a friend who is trying to pressure me into getting one for my 40th...but really, I'm not that excited about the idea. I've never been really into them. I'm a jewelry girl, and I'd rather just buy a new piece of jewelry. :)

You ladies are an interesting and varied lot though! Collette, your response was really wild. I never knew all that about you - sounds like you have had a varied and exciting life. I'm glad you made it though all the drug issues okay.

i have three tattoos..each one represents a different period in my life
sunflower-lower left side of back--It was right after I came back from school in london and I was coming out of a very dark period and rediscovering who I was...to me it represented the new me

Black circle/sun design--center top of back-The got this one about a year after college, I was going through a rebellios period and I wanted something that said I was tough

butterfly--center lower back- I got this when my mother was really sick...she had always said that when I was finally happy I was like a butterfly that had just came out of its cacoon
I love all my tattoos...I am thinking of getting another one, something that represents my baby jack

Way too permanent for me...plus my parents might kill me if they ever knew I had one.

I absolutely love tattoos. I love full sleves, hand and even neck tattoos. I am really love the art, history and symbolism. I think it is really cool when I see girl with great tattoos. That being said I do not have a single tattoo. I have thought about it a lot and have not come up with the oh so perfect, rest of my life tattoo. I also am super picky and really do not like the way tattoos look over freckles, which I have. So I have made the decision to stay ink fee. This makes mom super happy since my little bro has his whole back and chest done. She has had 2 tattoos and removed them both.

I have a small blue star on my foot. It doesn't have any significance, but (this is going to sound completely bizarre) I always felt like something was missing on my foot and I had almost this weird "need" to have a blue star on it. Go figure. I actually thought about it for three years before getting it when I was 19. I still love it and don't regret it at all. It's so small and inoffensive that I don't bother covering it up, even in business situations.

The best compliment I've had on it was from a friend of mine who said she hated tattoos, but mine was the only one she'd ever seen that she really liked.

Even though I love mine, I don't plan on getting any more. I like just having the one.

I have just TWO tattoos, and I have no regrets in getting them, love both of them!

They are both on my left leg:

On my left calf muscle - the first three letters of my first name

On my left ankle - a small butterfly, b/c butterflies are my favorite insect. I also like the meaning behind butterflies, how they start out in a cocoon, and turn into something beautiful..... :) BOTH tatts I think took LESS than 30 min., and that's just FINE w/me! LOL

I'd like 'maybe' three more (Virgo emblem, a SMALL rose, my initials, Princess in the Chinese emblem), but like some, I don't like pain. It took me 8 yrs. to get my butterfly, so I may wait another 8 yrs.... LOL

I've toyed with the idea of getting one, but I can't think of a design that would be meaningful and that I would like for the rest of my life. I would definitely get some kind of semi permanent tattoo that went away on its own after a year or two. That way I could have the experience with none of the commitment. wink I also have no idea where I would get it.  It would have to be easily concealable for work, somewhere where I won't gain/lose a lot of weight, and somewhere my mother would never, ever see since she thinks tattoos are awful.

Bastet - I sooo wish there was a way to get a tattoo that would only be around for a couple years.

I have two tattoos.  I have a tiny Chinese character on my shoulder (it means "loyal") and a small pink flower on my back.  They are both important to me and that is why I was prepared to put something on my body for the rest of my life.

My boyfriend just got his second tattoo done--his family's coat of arms.  Truthfully, I think it is kind of ugly, but I really love the meaning behind it and it is also very important to him.  I do hope he doesn't get any more, though.
