Hey

Lately, Ive been intrigued with tattoos, especially unique ones with a meaning or a story behind them.  Ive even been watching Miami Ink/LA Ink to see them.

I was curious if any of you all have any tattoos and if theres a story behind them? And if you wouldnt mind, pictures would be awesome! :)

Thanks!

I don't have any tattoos, because I cant think of anything I would want to commit to having on my body for the rest of my life.  But I wanted to post so your thread would be seen (since I moved it.) smile

Same here, and this is why I don't have any!

Collette posted in the general chart regarding a tattoo with meaning behind it that she was looking to get. Hopefully she will post over here too.

I don't have any, but my bf has a sun/moon tattoo on his shoulder that he designed.  It is very symbolic to him because his mother passed away and this tattoo symbolizes the rebirth (a new day) for his mom in a better place.

I have a gecko on my right shoulderblade. It's a pretty crappy tattoo and has absolutely no meaning to me. I was just being stupid and getting one because I could (I was 18 at the time, this was 9 years ago).

I desperately want to have it removed or covered up with something that I like. I don't wear tank tops because I don't like people seeing it and God forbid, asking me about it. It's actually pretty embarassing to have to tell someone that the permanent mark on you body has no significance.

I'd post a pic but there is no picture of it that exists, lol. I keep it well hidden.

No tattoos here.  My biggest issue is the needle....i don't even get flu shots because i pass out at the thought.  My second issue is commitment issues...have never found something I would like even 5 years later.

However, I  LOVE them.  My cousin has a couple that i am quite jealous of.  Every now and then, I think about overcoming my fear and getting something.

I'd love to get a tattoo right smack in the middle of my bicep. I think it would be seriously cool. Unfortunately, I can't commit. I don't know what to get and I'm pretty sure a 60 year-old woman with a biker tattoo would not blend in well. Plus I figure it's better to regret not getting one than getting one, ya know?

After reading some of the responses, I wanted to come back and add more to my response.

I think tattoos can be totally sexy. There's this guy i know and he has 3 simple black ones - one on his forearm, one on his shoulder, and one on his back, and I think he looks hot with them.  He regrets getting his tattoos though because he did them when he was young and they don't represent who he is anymore.

I have seriously considered getting one - frank lloyd wright's tree of life stained glass design - but I haven't because I can't commit to it. I also wouldn't want it to be visible - so what's the point in that?

I did see a story on erasable tattoos over the weekend though - this I would consider if I ever got the tattoo bug again... http://abcnews.go.com/WN/story?id=3472065

I've got the good luck bear from care bears on my lower back...it means many things. I got it right before I went of to college where I knew no one it was a good luck to the rest of my life thing. My dad calls me care bear. My family is part irish. I have always loved the care bears (dumb reason, but whatever), and I love the color green. Its been three years and I still don't regret it. I like the location because once I have business pants and a shirt tucked in its like it doesn't exist to my employers, but if I want to show it off I can do so.

I have a few
3 that mean alot to me and 1 I wonder WTF was I thinking and 1 I've since had removed
The one removed was vampire bites on my chest. Seriously, I was 15 and way into Goth at the time.
1 I think WTF is a Led Zepplin winged man on my stomach. I hate Led Zepplin but I got it during my drug days so I blame that
2 that mean alot I have Warrior in Japanese on my lower abs I got it in the Army I also have Fear No man in Japanese down my hip when i was in jump school a group in my platoon got Fear tattooed before our first jump. Those of us who completed Jump School finished our tattooos however we wanted. Those who fell out are stuck with Fear on them.

I'm currently working on another one I'll likely be getting this Friday. I'll be combining wings on my back with a pi up girl in army fatiques. I sort of want her to be part pin up girl and part comic book hero looking. I have a friend drawing something for me so we'll see how it goes! I'll post phots when I get it done! It should take up a good portion of my back!

Edited because I actually forgot about my back piece I already have! lol I have a dream catcher on my back that I love. It's beautiful and on my lower back. When I was just getting clean I went through a phase where I wasn't sleeping much at all. Wasn't used to sleeping without the help of drugs of some sort so bad insomnia set in and terrible dreams/nighmares/nighterrors when I did sleep. So the dream catcher was just my way of trying to put that behind me. Hence it being on my back.

Collette - I think your "fear" tattoo is one of the coolest things I have ever heard. You're such a badass wink.gif

I think so too.

I long to get a guardian angel on my hip, but I'm way too chicken. My grandmother --my favorite person in the world-- was absolutely obsessed with her guardian angel pins. She had to wear one everyday on her blouse, no matter what. They were her thing; she had collected several over the years as gifts. She gave one to each of the grandkids before she passed and was buried with the rest. My grandma is now my guardian angel and I want a tattoo to symbolize both that and her. Maybe someday...

My boyfriend designed the tattoo he got on his right bicep four years ago. It's a Celtic-ish cross with his father's (and his own) last name above and his mother's last name below it. It's really cool... simple, strong, bold, beautiful, just like him aww. When his little brother turned 18, our gift to him was to buy his first tattoo. He designed his own twist on my boyfriend's tattoo -- it's a cross with the two names above and below, but the cross is different -- and had it drawn on the same spot as my boyfriend's. I think it's really sweet that he wanted to be like his brother.

I've got 2 so far. My first one I got about 11 years ago and I still don't regret it at all. I love it still. I got it on my lower right side of my back where when I sit down, depending what top I'm wearing, you can see the frogs head. Second tat is on the back of my neck. I get lots of compliments on this one. It's a butterfly, in green just like my frog. My older brother got the same tatt but much lower on his neck, kind of between his shoulder blades i guess. I got a frog cause I've always loved them and it was something I did out of freedom. from leaving my parents house ....
and the butterfly I love because my brother and I were so close and he moved away years ago and I miss him to death! I think its so cool that him and i have matching tattoos! and if you knew my brother, he could pull the butterfly off. (he's not gay) He has a few more too.
I want more but I'm done with color. I also dont' want them to be seen if possible. I dont get tattoos for others to see, its for me to see and love. but If i do get some more I guess depending what I get, I would love to advertise it. I dont know yet.....

I got mine about 2 months ago...it took me several years to finally decide to get one. It's a blue dove...it reminds me of my MeMaw...everything she gave me was blue or had blue birds on it, and everything she gave my sister was red or had redbirds...so...my sister is getting a matching tattoo in red.

I like it because it's totally hidden under all of my swimsuits...my parents are very anti-tattoo, so i keep it concealed out of respect for them.

So here's the picture...it was taken the morning after I had it done,so it was still a littel tender. Sorry about the crotch shot...D: you can remove it if it's too much skin

By the way...that's my BF's hand...I don't have manhands...

This is something I have been thinking about a LOT lately.

Right now I am really obsessed with wrist tattoos and I want one really badly. I want to get the word Cheers inked on my wrist because it reminds me of Glasgow (I spent a semester there and it was the best decision of my life). I can't pull the trigger though (yet), mainly because that is a highly visible area and some day I'll have to cover it up EVERY day when I have a job. I think by then I would regret it. So I am back to the drawing board, maybe I'll get it in a different area.

My friend is getting a tattoo on her wrist on Thursday. I'm jealous!

Does anyone here have a wrist tattoo? Do you regret it? How do you cover it up for work?

I've been tattooed 4 times, one was covered up by a larger, prettier one ;)  I don't regret any of them, but I'm not really one for regrets anyway.

My first one is a smalll turtle on my lower stomach.  When I was 9 months old my family traveled back east to visit.  On the way there my mom picked up a desert tortoise (yes, illegally) in the Mojave Desert.  He was my favorite-est pet until he died when I was 17. So I got a tattoo of him.

My second  is a toadstool on my ankle and I used to get so sick of "shrooms" comments from people.  I got it because I thought it was cute, but I had really wanted another turtle.  My friends were giving me a hard time because I already had one.  So, every time I look at it I think..."Do what YOU want, not what someone else wants."  It's a nice reminder.

My third is a turtle on my lower back which was covered up by my fourth, another turtle.  I have a thing for turtles biggrin

I'm currently working on my fifth.  In between my shoulder blades I would like to get every (what I consider) momentous year of my life written in roman numerals.  I'm trying to figure out a way to have the numerals mixed with my ancestry.  How does one mix Rome and Poland?

Hubby hates tattoos so we'll see how this goes down.  I told him I had tattoos before we married and he raced before we married.  Even-steven.

OT:  A couple of the coolest tattoos I've seen:
From the Madeleine L'Engle book, A Wrinkle in Time.  A girl (from another forum) had Time (a straight line) and then a Wrinkle in Time (a line w/ squiggles).  Simple, yet amazing.
Another was a girl I saw when shopping on Melrose.  I really wanted to ask her if I could take a picture but I chickened out.  She had tools that corresponded with the bones of her body.  Down her spine was a huge vice and the backs of her calves had drafting compasses.

I have three tattoos.

One is a flower on my lower stomach that I got when I was 17. I don't really love it anymore, but I am keeping it. In a way, it now symbolizes to me the girl I was when i was 17...girly, optomistic, a little naive. I've considered going to a really good artist to make it into something cooler, but I haven't gotten around to it. No one except hubby sees it anyway.

On my back I have an egyptian symbol that means unity of the mind, body, and spirit. Seeing live music is my greatest passion and the symbol is also used in the artwork of my favorite rock record ever.

On one shoulder I have a black work piece that an artist friend drew for me. In all honestly, it doesn't have a meaning, I just thought it was a beautiful piece of art.

Wetbandit, I absolutely love tattoos on the inside of the wrist. I've never gotten one tho, because I do like that all my tattoos can easily be covered if I don't want to show them off.

Wow, some of your girls tattoos sound so cool! I dont have one. I have thought about getting one, but I dont think I would like it as i age. I would also be terrified of the needle!

My brother has two that I think are great. His first one is on the top of his left arm. Its the Alpha and Omega. It kinda looks like it was carved from a rock, or just really shaded...it symbolizes his faith.

His second one is awesome. Its on his right arm and partially on his back. It mixes his mexican and portuguese heritage and parts from our moms and dads sides. In the middle is the Olivas family shield, red and yellow stripes (moms side). On top of the shield is a portuguese crown. Underneath the shield is his last name Brazil in script (dads side). Wrapped around the bottom is a snake looking up fighting an eagle which is above the shield and crown. The eagles wings are spanned out across his arm to the top of his back by his shoulder blade. its pretty hard to describe....I wish I had pictures.

This comment won't win me any friends, but tattoos always struck me as rather "white trash." It's just hard for me to picture them being elegant or upscale.

That said, I am in awe of beautiful art on people's bodies, and I appreciate when things like this have a personal meaning (such as a traditional ethnic symbol, or something from a favorite book). It seems universal, at least here, that people regret the ones that don't have a personal significance.

It wouldn't be something I'd do, though. I have a spiritual thing against defacing my body...I don't even have pierced ears.
