say Kohl's, or some store like that and ask for part time and weekends off? I would want to work from 5-10pm if possible. Thoughts, suggestions? there's a Macy's, Anthropologie, Express, a puppy store and little boutique store at my near mall that I wouldn't mind working for ......

Try it.  If they really need the help, they will hire you.  I used to work retail while in school and some semesters I only worked one weeknight a week (this was after working there for a year, though).

Weekends off might be tough - you may have to pay some dues before earning the schedule of your choice - but requesting the evening shift should be no problem.

When I was in retail most people preferred to work mornings/days since you had to interact with fewer pesky customers and could get your paperwork and chores done.

I'd say go for it. Even though you aren't willing to work weekends, you want an evening schedule which is what what employers are always looking to fill. Good luck!

I've been thinking it over and I think I'd be happier working part time in the morning after dropping kids off at school and be able to work till they get out to pick them up.

So I'm going to try and get a morning part time job. I will let you know if I land one...

if the mall stores don't open till 10am., how early can workers get there to start the shift? 10 or earlier to prep things? any info. on this would help. thanks!

What about working in a bank, Tati?  When I was in banking, we had a teller that worked part-time while her kids were in school.  When I started in that field as a teller, I had no banking experience whatsoever, and I really liked being a teller.

when I worked at Macy's, the earliest the associates got there was about 1/2 hour earlier. The managers were there an hour earlier.

What about working in a school? A lot of the ladies at my school work in the cafeteria or the office part time -- it's perfect because they are on the same schedule as the kids. I don't know what the pay rate is for the office staff, but I know the cafeteria pays more than retail usually does.

I managed a book store, and people would request specific hours on their applications. It just depended on what I needed. I know the hardest hours to fill were weekdays because most of the people that applied were students. I had a few retired people and sahms who worked the day shifts during the week only. Whenever one left, I would struggle to fill those positions.

eta: I think my sahms would work 9:30 to 2 or 3.

Ditto - in a small store, where we were saving payroll hours, managers were there a half hour to an hour before opening, and regular sales staff came in at opening or maybe a few minutes before.
