i know there are some runners on ST so i was hoping to get some advice on training for a half marathon. i just signed up for a race in early november, so i have a little over 3 months to train. i'm in pretty good shape and i'm active (play coed softball, work out at the gym, yoga, etc), but i'm NOT a runner (yet). today i went to a sporting goods store where they do gait analysis and i bought a pair of good running shoes. i also got synthetic socks and a pair of spandex capris. anything else that i should invest in as i begin training? and any words of wisdom for how to train safely/motivate myself, etc? i can't believe i'm doing this!
I have a book recommendation for you, I think its called "Womens Running:A complete Guide" or somethng like that...I'll get the author for you when i go home. It has a ton of info

Me too! But it's in January & the official training starts in October. I've already started training for the training if that makes sense. I've lost about 5 lbs. so far & running is really a nice release after a long day.
I would join a running club/team. I'm actually training for my first triathlon with Team In Training right now, and doing it with a team is great! You always have someone to motivate you, they know exactly how to train you to get you ready, and the sense of camraderie is unbeatable. Plus there's nothing like a little friendly competition to keep me motivated. Anyway, I see you're from SF, and I know there are a lot of running clubs. I'd check out your local running store...in my area Forward Motion has a great running team. I know See Jane Run has one as well, but pretty much any running store should be able to point you in the right direction.
Oh, you might want to check out a fuel belt for hydration during your run, and either a shirt or spandex with pockets. And if you decide you want to try energy bars/gels during your run, I would check out Shot Blocks. So much easier to stomach than those nasty gels.
