How often do you go shopping?
Permalink Closed

I am having the hardest time NOT shopping. I find myself with the urge to go shopping at least twice a week. I used to have the money to go shopping when I felt like it, but I have a tight budget now and I simply cannot let myself go into stores if I don't have the money to spend.

I'm just curious as to what's "normal"? Do you guys go once a week? once a month? Or more rarely?

Also, do you set a budget aside before you go on a shopping trip?

I think my shopping budget dictates my shopping habits. I shop more when I have more to spend, you know? I used to shop nearly every day - mostly of out boredom. My monthly expenses recently increased so I've cut back. I haven't gone clothes shopping in I don't know how long. I try to distract myself with other activities, like working out, gardening, working overtime, or trying out a new recipe (which involves shopping!!! at the grocery store.) Also, when I'm just really wanting something new to wear, I'll challenge myself to create a new outfit using clothes I already have. Soooo yeh, DISTRACTION is the key. Haha.

Depends if I need something or if I have money to spend.  Usually I go once a week to get out and do something.  If don't go out for at least a couple hours on one of my two days off from work, I get super bored and feel like I wasted away at home.

when i was in uni 5 days a week, i would probably go shopping once every 1-2 weeks. but now that i'm at home job-hunting, i've been shopping more often because i'm bored

eta - i should probably add that most of the time when i go shopping, i don't actually buy anything

A couple of times a month, maybe. As my business grows, it's harder for me to find the time to get out to do it. I browse a lot online, during breaks. Plus, I don't really feel the urge as much anymore - I have a wardrobe with which I'm pretty happy overall.

When I do go out shopping, I often find I'm frustrated because there are things I'm looking for to round out my wardrobe, and I can't seem to find them...or can't find them for what I consider a "reasonable" price. So that makes me inclined to shop less, too.

I buy something online about once or twice a month. But IRL shopping, I usually go on a specific "shopping trip" once a month or so. But whenever I'm out and pass a store I want to go into, I'll duck in, or if I'm at Target or something I'll always look around. So I guess it rounds out to about once a week, but I only go out specifically to shop every few weeks

I usually have an idea of how much I want to spend, but sometimes I can't find anything and sometimes I find a TON of things I want...I won't spend more than I can afford, but if I find a lot of things I want and I'm having a lucky day, I'll take advantage of that.

Since I'm TRYING to save up for trips maybe next month, and in Sept. for sure, I would go shopping 3-4x's a week, I had it bad. I wouldn't really have a set budget, but I knew when to quit/stop shopping. Now that these trips are on the horizon, I 'may' give myself a $15.00/week budget, be it for a dress, skirt, shirt, etc. I do and don't do a lot of on-line shopping, so I'm pretty safe there.....LOL

I actually only leave the house with the intent of shopping about 2 or 3 times/year. This is mostly because I don't actually enjoy shopping; I get really frustrated by the amount of crap I have to sift through to find something I like.  If we are out at the movie theatre, I might swing into the Anthropologie which is close by. Otherwise, I mostly browse online. I probably browse online at least a little everyday, but I only place an order once a month or so.

I browse a lot on line to get ideas, but rarely buy. I go shopping probably every other week, and maybe buy one or two things. The shopping isn't great where I live, so lately I have been setting aside $$$ for out of town shopping trips every other month or every three months. It has helped reduce the number of silly purchases I make sooooooo much.

I browse online constantly while at work. It's hard for me to keep track of how much I buy online because I don't have to swipe a CC, and it's not instant gratification. Obviously I can check my CC online or print e-receipts, but it's not the same as going to a store.

As for B&M shopping, I go to stores more than I buy from stores. Almost every weekend I "go shopping" somewhere, even if I don't intend to buy anything. On weekdays I might stop by Target or Old Navy on my way home.

I used to go shopping once a week, I thought that was the norm, fashion wise anyways. Now that I'm trying to save as much as possible, I shop once a month, twice if I need something for a special occasion.

I shop by what my budget indicates. At my previous job, I was so broke that I couldn't even go grocery shopping half the time, so shopping for anything else was completely out of the question. Now that I'm at a new job and have some more free money, I shop about once a month. I'm trying to build up a good work wardrobe (which I was completely lacking before) and once I have that, I'll probably stop shopping as month. I'm trying to pay off my debt and save money, so once I have the wardrobe that I need, there won't be a need to shop as frequently.

Lately it seems I've been shopping once a week. I might only buy one small thing. When I was working retail I wish I could buy something everyday. All I would do on my breaks would be walking around the mall browsing. Of course I alsways found something that I liked. Maybe now that your in retail and in a nice store, you always see something that you like, or are more aware of what the fashions are, so you want something like that. since youre on a budget, I would set up a list of things you want for every 3 months. So say for instance: July-September: 1 pair of jeans, 2 dresses, 5 tops/blouses, 1 pair of shoes. Then set up your budget how much you want to spend on the total, or on each category. IDK. It would all depend on things you need. For birthdays and christmas you could factor more in (from gifts, etc.).

I think once you set a budget or think of things that you NEED, you'll be more selective of whats appealing to you.

Probably about once per month.  It's b/c I work in downtown LA so there's no real way to shop during the work day, and traffic is sort of heinous coming home from the office, so I don't really feel like getting off the freeway and dealing.  On the weekends, I love my neighborhood so much that I don't always feel like venturing out - so other than Ron Herman and BCBG - I don't shop much.

When I lived closer to the Grove, Beverly Centre and Third, I shopped a ton more.  I also don't shop as much online as previously, because I changed jobs a few months ago, and I don't have as much disposable income as before.  And, I think I might be good on clothing for a few monthsashamed

Usually once or twice a month. I do browse online almost everyday though. I think I look more than I buy. Sale times I might shop more (end of season clearance, etc.).

I'm 100% influenced by my budget and my work situation. Previously I had worked in business casual environments, but now I dress super-casual.

Years ago (like in the FH days), I used to go shopping 2 to 3 times a week. It was so easy because I worked right by the Beverly Center, the Grove, and the fab Loehmanns. I was so familair with Loehmann's that I could tell you when any given item had first shown up at the store.

Now, I think I shop twice a month if I'm lucky. I don't really go unless I need to replace something or if I'm in search of anything in particular. The only time I browse is when I go to get my nails done because there are some cute boutiques very close by. I still love clothes, but I have most of the things I absolutely need. I could stop shopping for a couple of years and I'd still be OK because I have so many basics. It's OK. I'm just putting the funds towards the mortgage instead. wink

After I move, I'll probably go boutique shopping in my neighborhood twice a month or so, but that's it.

lately, i've been shopping for house stuff, and it's only been 1x/wk.  however, i shop for clothing/shoes 1x/month, but browse about 1x/wk just to kill time or get a fix for what's out there.  i found that by browsing, i tend to refrain from making impulsive purchases.

I go in sprees but tend to resist more often (thank god!).  I'll buy nothing for a month or so, then I'll make a big trip to the mall.  I never spend that much though because I really don't have the means to buy big.  Final point: I always feel like I am catching up when it comes to clothing.  More needs fewer wants.

This is me too (minus the movies/Anthro outings) - rare are the shopping expeditions, but I shop a little online almost every day. I hate crowds and mall parking and such, so I really have to will myself to go out and shop like normal people do.

That said, if a friend needs my help getting some outfits for a new job, or a dress for an event, I am always quick to pick up the bat-phone and shop vicariously.

Another thing I do is browse a site (especially random sale merchandise), add a bunch of things to a shopping cart, and then quit before I buy. Sometimes I go back a few days later, most times I don't.
