any pit bull owners out there? - UPDATE
Permalink Closed

We found a pit bull this weekend wandering around our neighborhood.  He is still pretty young, probably about 1 year.  We pet him and he seemed nice.  He had a collar, but no tags.  We put him in our back yard b/c I figured if people saw a pit bull wandering around, they might call the police or the pound, and I hated to see him killed.

I have posted signs in a 2 mile radius at gas stations and places around the neighborhood.  One store employee thought he recognized him and thinks that his family walks him to the store sometimes.  I am hoping that they call soon.

However, if no one responds...should we keep him?  He is the sweetest thing....in two days I haven't even heard him bark...my husband said he barked one time with him.  Our neighbors cat even ran by and he just sits there all chilled out.  My husband even gave him a bath and he just sits calmly.

I just worry about the risks and liability.  Do any of you have pit bulls?  I found a no-kill shelter that will try to find someone to adopt him, but my husband has fell in love with this dog...and really wants to keep him.  I don't know what to do.

UPDATE - Sadly, but i guess good in some ways...the owner called us and claimed his dog.  He was a really nice guy and was able to describe the dog and even had a photo.  My husband and I are so sad...we had decided that we would keep him and had gotten way more attached than I ever thought possible in 4 days.  We know now that we want a dog...probably not a pit bull, but we will be looking for a breed that is best for us.

My mom has a Pit Bull and he is the sweetest boy. He plays well with my sister's kids and is nice to my mom's little dog and her cats. The only problem with him is that he sometimes thinks that he is as small as the other dog, ha!!

I have a pit mix, and my SIL has a full blooded pit.

If the previous owners treated the dog well, and like any other breed of dog, it will grow up to be as docile and wonderful as any other dog. If the previous owners were mean to it to raise it as a guard dog or raise it for dog fighting, then you are in trouble.

If, as strangers, the dog has been good to you, then it would probably make a good pet. If you contact your local humane society I'm sure they can give you some pointers and would even do a health evaluation for you. You may be able to turn the dog in and agree to adopt it if their staff feels it is an adoptable pet.

In general, pit bulls have a hard time getting adopted because people are fearful. At the humane society by me, they will not destroy a dog unless it is "unadoptable" meaning it isn't capable of getting along with potential owners. They put the dog through a test of sorts, and if it passes, it stays until it is adopted.

My SIL's dog is a puppy, and is very well behaved but very energetic. My dog is 8 and was a pain in the ass as a puppy (she chewed EVERYTHING and took longer than other breeds I've had experience with in learning some commands), but is a great dog.

I agree with Greendiamond. I've never owned a pit bull but I think that if the dog is raised to be mean and a fighter then thats what it will do. I know its not the same type of dog but I know from previous experience with my Chihuahua. We raised her to "play fight" and now we regret it!

I have a 4 year old pit female. My dad also had one as well (we just lost her at 13 this past xmas). My dad's was the BEST dog in the entire world. My girl is close though. I think you could not ask for a better dog personality wise. It is important that your lifestyle will fit a pit, because it does take a responsible owner. They are a mix of couch potato and very active. IMO the thing with pits is they are very social. If you leave them in the yard and never pay attention to them they will not turn out well. If you hang out with them they will be the biggest love bugs on the planet. In my experience they are kinda stubborn and hard headed but a little firmness and consistency and they are great.
I highly recommend keeping him if you can/the owner dont claim him. I would be very proactive in making sure you really know his personality and how he will react in different situations, before introducing him to new things. My girl was attacked by another pit at the dog park, since that day she does not do well at off leash parks because she has an attitude with certian dogs (not pattern at all.) We also know that my girl cannot be off the leash in an open area. No matter how well trained she is, if there is freedom she is off like a rocket. in a fenced area she will come on command no problem.
We also have cats. One of the cats is her buddy and they sleep together and groom each other. The other cat hates the dog and swipes at her. That was a bit of a challenge. She has never gone after the cat, actuall she will walk out of her way to avoid that cat, but she has been surprised a few times and growled at the cat.
She is also protective of me. My dad was kidding around one day and we were play boxing. the dog ran over meaning business but never did anything but sit between us.
So I have gone on long enough but I love love my pit. One last thing if you cannot keep him and dont find his home. check with your shelter and see what their policy on adoption for pits is. Sometimes you can find a shelter in a surrounding town that is no kill, or independently try to adopt him out.
Keep us posted.RegenImage.aspx?I=58184910&P1=SAN1&P2=SD4&G=3E4D8DD8-36A2-45DE-BEE6-050BD433B9DF&T=Ihere is my girl

My family had a pit bull when I was growing up and I was scared to death of that dog. Her daddy attacked my brother when he was a toddler so I'm sure that had something to do with me being terribly untrusting of the breed. So, obviously, my experience with pits hasn't been so great BUT my best friend is the very, very proud owner of two pits. She has an eight year old daughter, too. The four of them live comfortably and happily together. Precious and Smoke - yeh, for real - are very well behaved and pretty chilled out when I'm around them. I'm nervous as hell, of course, but the dogs don't seem to mind. I really do think it's all about how you raise a good dog and I'm sure any vet or Cesar Millan will tell you the same thing....

I think Pits are VERY unfairly stereotyped. If you feel a connection with him and you are ready to take on the responsibility, I think you should keep him. Pits are notoriously hard to find homes for, and some shelters will destroy them. IMO, you have to be careful around any animal, whether it's a cat or a Great Dane or a chihuahua or a pit bull. Deuce has great advice if you do decide to keep him. I am a big believer in trainers for new pets, too. Good luck!

ETA: I have a suspicion that Halley has some Pit in her...and you know she is the Greatest EVAH.

Thanks to all of you for your imput.  We are getting more and more attached to him each day.  He is so awesome.  We got one phone call last night...some guy left a message saying that he was the owner...we tried to call back and it was a phone at 7-11.  He never called again.  I don't know if it was just a prank or what.  My hubby thinks that if it were the real owner, they would have called back again and again.

I'll keep you guys posted.  I think we may take greendiamond's advice and see if the shelter would check him out then let us adopt him.  That way I would feel better about him.  I took a ton of pics last night...I'll post them when i can get them downloaded tonight.

I fell in love w/ pits when I was volunteering at our local animal shelter. They are a great, goofy breed w/ adorable personalities. Several of our friends have adopted pits and they've become great pets. I agree that they've been unfairly sterotyped (a lot of breeds have that problem), but I also understand why they make people nervous based on the way they've been portrayed in the media.

I do think you have to be careful with any dog you find since you don't know it's history. I also think that all dogs are better off w/ a little training, regardless of the size.

Re: the guy that called. Be careful. I don't recall where you live, but some regions of the country have a huge pit fighting problem right now. I'd be worried about someone claiming him for fighting or as bait.

My brother has a full-blood pit.  His name is Mayhem (totally misleading) and he is the best dang dog I have ever met.  Seriously.  I have absolutely no problem w/ letting Mr. play/romp/jump/pull on him.  He is perimeter trained and will not even leave the yard for a cat! I think in another life he was a lap-dog.  I love my Whiskey dog, she's a golden retriever, but she's not near as social or as good w/ kid's as Mayhem is.

I get really frustrated at the reputation these poor dog's carry.  They are not inherently bad dog's.  I feel the same about shepard's and pincher's.  It kill's me to see stupid-ass owners with huge spike collars around the dog's neck while dragging a 25-lb weight.  I think the owner's should be collared!  Grrrr.

I agree with this. If it was my dog, I'd have called a hundred times. This is another reason I think you should keep him vs. sending him to a shelter. Some shelters aren't careful with who they adopt to.
