I've been thinking about getting a perm for the longest time - I don't expect ringlets or anything crazy, but I love hair with some wave in it and I'd like to experiment with that myself because my hair is poker straight.
Has anyone had a perm? Obviously I know it damages hair a bit, but is it horrific? Enough to keep me away from it?
Also, when your hair starts to grow out, does it look ridiculous? I mean, with straight hair coming out of my head and all...since I'm just thinking about getting a bit of wave, I think that I could go longer without touch-ups because it won't be noticeable, but I guess I'm wondering about when I decide to get my straight hair back. If I get a perm once and decide I don't want it anymore, does it just gradually fade or will I have to go back and get actually get it re-straightened? I'm afraid of processing my hair that much...
TIA!

haha...I had one in 1989. It looked sort of like this on me:
J/k. I think what you want is a body wave, or a loose perm (someone here probably knows the term better than me). I have seen it look really pretty; I asked my stylist about it a few years ago, but she said she doesn't recommend it for fine hair like mine. If your hair is a bit thicker, I think it would look great! I don't think it's any more damaging than dye.
