I've been contemplating this one for awhile. As a general rule, I dislike a white purse. My grandmother buys a new one every year, and has for ages, and I've helped her with this task since I was eight. She never picks the ones I like! I think this is why I think old lady when I think white purse. Sorry grandma!
However, I recently bought a new dress, and was contemplating what color handbag to carry when a co-worker of mine (who is the only person in the office with any fashion sense) suggested a white purse. I was a little taken aback.
I have since found one I like (for a white purse) and bought it, however I really don't know if/when I'll ever carry it.
I think white bags are fine,as long is the shape/style is more modern they don't seem old lady. I would never carry a white bag,but only because I know I would get it dirty.

ditto. I don't think white bags scream old lady more than any other color.

Hmm....I've never thought of them as old ladyish. I just bought my second white purse a few weeks ago because I used the old one to death. Mine is a staple in the summer. I like them because they're just as basic as a black purse, but have a bit more pop, imo.
I think of white purses in the same way as I think of white shoes....nice in theory, not good in personal practice. That said, I have admired them on others...so I guess just not for me.
I love white bags! I don't know that I could carry one because I'm way too hard on my handbags and like to sit them on the ground and stuff. If you're a careful handbag owner, there is one from Hayden-Harnett that will be on sale tomorrow at 1pm for $125 that I love love love. The leather is supposed to be really soft though so it may be harder to keep clean. I bet a bag with tougher leather wouldn't be hard to keep clean though. I think you should def. get one!
It depends on the bag. A little white bag might seem old-lady, but an oversized one is cool and fresh. I have a big white tote from coach that I abuse so much, but it still looks great over a year later. Honestly, its held up better than some of my darker (and more expensive!) bags.
