I may be going to New York City at the end of June. Hopefully we would be flying in on Saturday and flying out on that next Thursday. We won't have the days to do fun stuff because my sister will be in a conference all day. Nights are open and of couse all day Sunday. Any must sees? I think we'll be staying on Broadway. I have no idea where to eat, where to shop, etc that's relatively close. Help me! Thanks!
are you staying around the Times Square/theater district area? (I think that's what you meant, but I'm just checking cause Broadway itself actually runs most of the length of Manhattan!) I would highly recommend walking a few blocks west from where you'll be, to 9th avenue for meals... don't get sucked into going to Olive Garden or Applebee's! Ninth Ave. in the 40's and 50's is a great neighborhood, with tons of small restaurants, lots of them regional: there's Brazilian, Thai, Vietnamese, Mexican, Italian, Spanish, Indian, all within a few blocks of each other. I'm not as sure of what to recommend for shopping--what are you interested in?
Sephorablue, it's in the times square area, it's the Novotel. Thanks for that food recommendation, I'm definitely not going to go to any big chain restaurants. Especially not one that I have here (Little Rock, AR). I got a Manhattan street map so hopefully we won't get lost! As for shopping, we'd kinda like to visit some local boutiques and would like to maybe go somewhere where we could find a lot of street shopping. Any recs?
A good neighborhood to check out for boutique browsing and restaurants is the west village--just take the 1/9 train down from times square to Christopher Street and prowl around. West Bleecker St. has some great little shops. For street shopping, there are a lot of vendors around the theater district, especially in the upper 40's and lower 50's main place people, but the place where they are most concentrated is definitely Canal Street downtown. Hope that helps!
I second the West Village. I love strolling around there and there are a lot of great restaurants there that are not too expensive. For street vendors I like Soho, along West Broadway. It's a fairly short walk from the West Village, and you can check out Anthro while you're there.
There are some great shops around 18th-14th and Broadway. There are the big ones (Gap, VS, Sephora, etc) but also more obscure like L'Occitaine (sp?), ScoopNYC, Intermix, Bloomies (not so obscure). There's also a TON of street vendors selling handmade beautiful unique jewelry for less than $20. Make sure to bring cash though.
by train, you're really convenient to everything. I'd recommend Soho for hardcore shopping (downtown R to Prince street, or F to Broadway/Lafayette- stores are concentrated on Broadway south of houston, but there are stores on west broadway, spring, prince, etc- you'd need a full day to really check out all the stores), west village for browsing/getting lost (its soo pretty), and you could always check out the shmancy stores on madison and fifth ave- i think Barneys is like 60th and..something ritzy. There are tons of street vendors in soho.
