This one hit too close to home...Kelsey Smith, an 18 year old girl, was abducted from a Target I frequent (I live in Overland Park KS) in broad daylight (7 pm on a Saturday eve) and killed. He followed her into Target, followed her around the store, then left w/o buying anything as she was paying. Then in the parking lot he pushed her into her car, and they found her body 2 days later. They found him and he's in jail. She graduated from high school 2 weeks ago and was shopping for a gift for her boyfriend, whom she was meeting for a graduation party and dinner that night to celebrate their 6 month anniversary. The alleged killer is 26 and has a wife and 4 year old son, and no one believes she knew him...but he was on myspace and logged on shortly before he abducted her (he and his wife have since deleted their myspace pages but you can see much of it here http://www.thekansascitychannel.com/news/13464367/detail.html). He was described as nice and quiet by neighbors. Apparently he killed her and then just went home to his wife and son, in the same black truck that was caught on a surveillance video. Kelsey's father has a background in law enforcement, and on his myspace page he said he loved the movie Strangeland, which is about a man who stalks the daughter of a police detective. It just freaks me out that in broad daylight in a nice suburban area a guy can just run up and push a girl into her car, then drives off with her car. You can see the people walking around the parking lot! Some people are saying she should have had mace, but I don't have my mace ready in daylight in a Target parking lot of a suburban area...I think I'll start doing that now! http://www.amw.com/missing_persons/case.cfm?id=45587
i'm outraged! how in the hell did no one see anything? how freakin scary that something like this can happen in broad daylight with people all around!!! i'm so thankful they caught the guy. that poor girl and her family. what a psycho; that is definitely him on myspace -- putting his brand of crazy out there for the world to see. *shakes head*

Yeah DH and I have been following this story since it happened. What is so awful is that cnn.com reported that they recieved over 500 phone calls and tips leading them to this guy, and yet no one at target tried to intercede or call police while this abduction was taking place. (even though many people witnessed it)
I guess the moral of the story here is ..You can NEVER be to cautious even in broad daylight in a croweded parking lot. :(
That's so terrible. I think MySpace can be dangerous if you put too much info up or don't make your page private. I always thought I was safe in the daylight, but maybe not. It can happen to anyone anywhere.
I know, really, really scary. I was born and raised in the KC area and a friend of a friend knows the family of the victim. Up until 3 years ago, I lived about 1.5 miles from that area. I didn't shop at the target (in fact, don't remember a target there), but in the mall next door. I can't believe no one tried to stop him. The pain inflicted on that poor girl's family and that poor 4 year old child is beyond measure...
