globally or just here?  Girls into fashion or everyone?
i'd probably say abercrombie/nike/gap/levi's etc, but i feel like thats not the answer you're looking for.

I would say for jeans it is Seven.

Looking for lines that when you shop at a store you think "instant credibility". Boutique brands or high end department store brands.

this is kind of hard because while i think there are a lot of big, recognizable brands out there, i prefer boutiques with smaller niche labels...so for me i wouldn't think if a store had sfamk, that it lends credibility. jmo.

i also prefer the indie lines.
probably vince, marc by marc, juicy couture, seven/true religion, botkier, ella moss, rachel pally, 12th street by cynthia vincent..they have all been around and are recognizable to the girl with money to spend. but i don't think they really make a boutique special..

i'd also add bulga, kooba, COH, velvet, dvf, and maybe theory.

aside from indie cachet, a good variety also does it for me. most boutiques seem to carry some combination of the same 10-25 brands, but what they choose to keep in stock seems to be more important. example: i went to a few boutiques last week, and i was immediately turned off by one because although they carried a good 10 denim brands, the only jeans they had were skinny/cigarette leg jeans (!!!). another really had casual tees down (michael stars, velvet, james perse, c&c, splendid etc), but not much else.

I agree that Seven, DVF and Marc by Marc are probably the most recognizable boutique/high end brands. I would probably be most excited to see some of my new drools -- like Grace Sun, Lauren Moffatt, 3.1 P Lim -- or constant faves -- like C&C, DKNY, Elie Tahari, DVF, Petit Bateau, etc.
