I'm surprised that she didn't breast feed... or is that considered an animal product? breast milk is as natural as you can get...

Vegans Sentenced in Baby's Death

By GREG BLUESTEIN, Associated Press Writer

Superior Court Judge L.A. McConnell imposed the sentences on Jade Sanders, 27, and Lamont Thomas, 31. Their son, Crown Shakur, weighed just 3 1/2 pounds when he died of starvation on April 25, 2004.

The couple was found guilty May 2 of malice murder, felony murder, involuntary manslaughter and cruelty to children. A jury deliberated about seven hours before returning the guilty verdicts.

Defense lawyers said the first-time parents did the best they could while adhering to the lifestyle of vegans, who typically use no animal products. They said Sanders and Thomas did not realize the baby, who was born at home, was in danger until minutes before he died.

I heard about this the other day. I also dont know why the mother didnt breast feed. That is the healthiest food an infant can have. Im guessing the parents did not speak with a doctor during their pregnancy, or at least about the babys diet.

I understand if thats your lifestyle, but to put an innocent childs life at risk is horrible. I mean how could they think soy milk and apple juice would be sufficient enough? Im guessing they wouldnt live off of that....

oh man, this makes me so sad... if they truly didn't know any better, this could've been easily avoided by a trip to any (any!) doctor...

She probably wasn't breast feeding because she was smoking pot. Stupid hippie jerks.

How could you not realize the baby was in danger only weighing 3 1/2 pounds at 6 weeks old?!?

sounds like the "vegan lifestyle" was really just a cover-up for abuse and neglect...
I can't believe the granparents can honestly say that he was like any other baby..happy and smiling....when he only weighed 3 1/2 lbs!
I hope they rot in jail...

Exactly what I was thinking. So ridiculous they would not even feed formula to a newborn.

i agree. i am annoyed that they used this as an excuse, or for that matter, that the press focused on the fact they were vegan. (which had nothing to do with them not going to doctors, or a nutritionist to see what would be best for the baby) not all women are able to breastfeed, but there are plenty of vegan formulas available.

Yeah, these parents were not real vegans if they were not breastfeeding their child (excluding any physical anomolies, special circumstances, etc.)  From what I have read, breastfeeding is like a mandate for them, they do it.  If they can't, that means formula, obviously.  So these parents were using the vegan lifestyle as an an excuse for negligent, dense, criminal behavior.  It's just horrible, but baby killers come up with all sorts of methods, don't they?

The baby died in 2004?  I remember a similar story I heard a few years ago about parents who were on a "raw food" diet and their baby died.  Same logic.  It's not the diet/lifestyle, it's the abusive parenting.

That's so horrible. I'm not personally of the opinion that children should be forced into a vegan lifestyle, or any other diet that limits whole food groups. However, even though I don't agree with it I'm sure a baby could have vegan formula or SOMETHING besides apple juice and soy milk and still be healthy. It was definitely abusive parenting - I can't understand anyone, even who shy away from conventional medicine, simply not getting care for their OBVIOUSLY emaciated child.

That is just so awful. How horrible for that child who starved to death. Especially in a country like the USA, when food, healthcare etc were available to prevent that.

sadangel.gif I can't believe that there was no one for them to talk to though about bringing up a baby in a healthy way while sticking to their Vegan lifestyle. They had to have friends who had a baby, or been able to find a book.

Anyone who thinks it's ok for a 6 week old baby to weigh 3.5 pounds is ridiculous. Baby's are supposed to be cute, dimply little cherubs!
