Help me make over my guest room!
Permalink Closed

I am officially tired of my guest room. It's really cute, very girly, very "shabby chic," but it doesn't go with the rest of the house at all. I am moving everything to our other bedroom (so I don't have to repaint), but I need ideas on how to make over my stuff. I want something a bit more modern and current. The rest of my house is sort of Pottery Barn-esque with some eclectic touches thrown in.
Here is the room now:

I bought this Marimekko comforter:

The walls are this color (slate grey with bluish/purple undertones)Baby Seal (DE 6361)
The room has one window with white wood blinds, white trim and thick white crown moulding.

I need to know:

-What color I should paint my wrought-iron headboard. Right now it's purple & clashes terribly. My instincts say black, but that seems harsh. I dunno.
-What to do with my nightstand. I was thinking of maybe staining it a dark wood color? It's hard to see in the pic, but it's similar to this one:

-new lamp (or can I put a funky shade on the girly one I have now?)

-what to do with the walls. I am guessing I can't salvage my little wall shelf. My MIL suggested getting some cool fabric and stapling it over small, square wood frames so they would look sort of like canvases.

-any window treatments? Or leave them be? Any other ideas?

Many thanks for any ideas you have?

I think black would be really great for the headboard - the shape is so delicate that it would just make the design stand out, but not in a harsh way.  IMO the purple is harsher than black!  Love, love, love that comforter ...

I kind of like the painted nightstand in a light color and think the detail might get lost if it was darker.  What about changing the knobs/pulls on it?  And maybe doing a color glaze over the paint finish, but rubbing most of it off so it settles in the grooves?

The lamp you have is cute and I don't think it has to go.  You could always change out the shade though, maybe a black one there too for a bit more contrast and to tie in the black of the headboard?

As for window treatments, I personally like the look of curtains whether or not they're functional.  Hanging a (black?) curtain rod high on the wall and getting full-length curtains is a neat look in a bedroom - very luxurious!

Hmmmm, wall art.  What if you got together a bunch of smaller framed pieces (things you have or small canvases or whatever) and hung them allllll over the wall the bed is on?  Like all above the headboard and down the sides, ending at the height of the nightstand?  I'll see if I can find a pic - it's a neat, unexpected look.

I love the combination of blue and black, but since your blue looks like it has slightly warmer undertones, I'd go with chocolate brown for the headboard.  I'd do some off-white or khaki colored simple tab curtains and leave the nightstand as is.

Since the headboard will stand out more against the wall once it's painted a darker color, I wouldn't put any art above it.  I'd put art on the two walls next to the wall that the bed is on and then use floor lamps next to the bed.  I looooooooove these ones from West Elm (I think killa mentioned she has these) and I think they'd look super cute in your room:

They have the same lamp in a table lamp and that could work too.  While I like the lamp you currently have, it seems very feminine to me--I think you probably want something a bit more gender neutral in your guest room.

Here's some simple wall art, also from West Elm, but I think Pier 1 and all sort of other places would have a similar thing:
printed botanical wall art
You could also buy some canvases and acrylic paint at Michaels and easily paint your own with a cool stencil or something.

Finally, I'd top it off with some accessories like a big floor vase with some bamboo or something similar.

I really like the idea of a chocolate brown headboard.

I think you may need a new lamp though. I like the current girly one, but don't know if it will fit the new feel your going for, even if refashioned with a new shade. I do really like the one NCshopper posted. I might consider adding an accent color and using that in the art instead of being so monochromatic.

i love the bedding you chose! i actually like the idea of a deep navy blue for the headboard and i actually like your idea of black! you'd need to do black elsewhere in the room though. here's a lamp with a black fabric shade that i love:

you could stain your nighttable in ebony.

if you want to do window treatments or throw pillows, here are some great fabrics from purlsoho.com:

my first thought for the headboard was a coppery orange color. Kind of unexpected.

i must of accidentally deleted this suggestion from my post, but i thought a terracotta-y burnt orange color would look great as well. a total contrast plus it would give you a second color to work with.

I think either black or chocolate brown for the headboard.

you could go with a hollywood regency feel-
-Paint the headboard white/black
-I think yellow or red would pop against the blue, depending how bold or soft you want the room to be
-Get one of those ornate framed mirrors & paint the frame white.  You can usually find the house party ones at Goodwill for cheap, and just paint over the gold.
-Take the shelf down
-See if you can find a bamboo/trellis style chair at yard sale/thrift store and repaint it to put in corner of room
-frame a scrap of fabric w/nature/bird design753DEB51815D22E47A271D81941495.jpg
-chinoiserie vases

these are such great ideas, you guys! Thank you! Those who suggested brown or copper for the headboard -- do you think it would clash with the wall color (it's a cool grey)?
