I currently use hand-me-down luggage from my parents. It's all in pretty good working order, but the bags are anywhere between 5 and 15 years old. I plan on using them until they fall to shreds because I don't travel enough to justify the expense of owning nice luggage.

When I was 14, I was convinced that I would drop 3k or so on LV monogram luggage. Maybe when I travel more, I'll drop it on these bags. I don't want the monogram any more, but I do still really like the Damier and Epi options.

I personally wouldn't, but I don't travel too much at this point in my life. I did fly over the holidays with my black samsonite (a gift) complete with ribbon tied to the handle so I could identify it. However, my luggage made it to my destination several hours before me, as did many people's that day (bad Friday before Christmas nightmare). The sea of black bags at my destination with fabric tied to them was overwhelming. It would have been nice to have a suitcase that stuck out a bit, but I think I would have been worried about it more if I knew my $$$ bag was sitting in the middle of a baggage terminal hours away from me.

I 'll try to be an anti-enabler here...I wouldn't drop too much money on luggage for several reasons:

-Higher priced (or even if it is just cool looking) luggage is more prone to being stolen.
-Luggage is the kind of thing that gets used and abused. The airline workers will literally throw your bag around and there is nothing worse than finding that the bag you adore is broken in two pieces when you get it back.
-The problem with leather is that it is probably pretty heavy. Heavier luggage is harder to handle and depending what size you get (42 inch to 50 inch especially) it may push you over the lbs. limit and could cost you money if the airlines consider it "oversize" or overweight. (Granted you did say you were looking at a leather carry-on so it should still be small enough not to be "overweight").
-Expensive or unique luggage is often harder to repair if indeed it does get broken.

Ironically, I used to rep high-end luggage (hence my name Travelgirl) so I have a whole "showroom" of expensive luggage and hopefully I'll never have buy luggage again but I would stick to the practical big name luggage makers (Tumi, Victorinox Swiss Army, Travelpro, Samsonite)if I had to replace my luggage for the reasons above. One company (which was not the company I worked for) called Briggs and Riley will even replace damaged luggage (even if the airlines damage it!) and I like that kind of guarantee. All luggage is expensive but I would hate for you to fall in love with your bag only to have it stolen or ruined (especially if you spend big dollars on it).

no way would I spend that much on luggage. I use the same set that my grandparents got me before I went to college over 10 years ago (God, I guess it's been a while). It's getting beat up (one suitcase is missing a set of wheels), but it's taken a lot of abuse. I may replace it one of these days, but when I do, I'll probably pick up something cheap from Marshall's or TJ Maxx.

well, the thing about this bag is its a trolley carry on. I wouldn't check it, so i don't have to worry a ton about it being stolen or broken. And it has wheels so i'm not worried about weight. It's only 21" but kind of looks like the LV trolley that lilykind posted. It has a lifetime guarantee should it break.

So i'm not really worried about that- I guess it just seems expensive for luggage. But a bag can go for that much, and i think luggage is a better investment. If i spend $700 on a purse, most likely i'd keep wanting more bags, whereas I could buy this luggage, and never replace it again (unless it was stolen).

I wouldn't spend that much for a piece I woudl have to check in, but for a carry-on I would.
I have the LV Pegase on my wish list for me as my carry on. (It goes for $1740, yikes!)

after having 2 mid-label suitcases break on me, i invested in both a carry-on and a large Tumi bag - total it was about $1600 and so worth it. they should last forever.

I travel quite a bit (several times a month) and there is no way I would spend that much on luggage. Luggage takes a beating (whether you check it or as a carry on). I am always throwing mine around or someone else is. I guess, for me, there are other things I would rather spend my money on.

One more thing to think about is cost per use-if you are going to use it a lot then $700 won't sting as much. And ..if you love it and you know it is going to be staying with you (and not be checked)-get it! It will be something you have forever and I like the fact that it has a lifetime guarantee.

but that isn't even a tenth of how nice it looked in person. I stalked the person, literally, at the risk of looking like a complete creep, to see the brand name. the leather looked a little more like this:

but had scratches in it from being worn in. I love that look and love when leather looks beat up and decades old.

So, I am not going to buy it right away, but despite all the naysaying- it has still made me want the bag, which i guess means its a good buy. i've always adored nice luggage and purses that look luggage and anything that reminds me of traveling, so maybe thats why its worth it to me.

Im conflicted on this one. I travel alot, so I love when I see chic girls with cool luggage. However, when it comes to dropping the money I never seem to be able to spend alot. I seem to care more about spending money on packing whats inside the suitcase, then the actual suitcase itself.

Ok maybe I am an enabler. Bu tI think the way it sounds - You REALLY like this piece. If you mull over it for a month and still want it. I say go for it. As a carry-on kind of piece. It's less likely to be stolen.

Myself, I have a luggage set I paid about $200 for (2pcs) and it's lasted me YEARS. I also have a coach carryall and it has aged well. It was a gift I think around $500? I think it's worth it and I never have to check it. It doesn't get damaged or stolen.
At their (Coach) outlet I have seen some of their solid leather travel bags/suitcases and they have that look like your. Leather Simple Garment Bag

I also have a fabric carry-on rolling suitcase from Marshalls (brand slips my mind) and it was only $50 it is so good!

Also on my wishlist since college is an L.V. Pegase. I would never want to check a nice suitcase like L.V. or the one you want. It's hard though with all the restrictions on carryons these day - you ineveitably have to check your luggage for longer trips. If you go on short trips or weekend trips alot (which I do) then you;d get a lot of use out of it!

I agree with this. I have a nice-ish set of luggage that I like a lot and probably combined cost $1000 for three pieces -- but because I travel frequently, it has really gotten quite beat-up over the past three years. When I replace it, it will be with another matching set that is reasonably high quality, but nothing truly high-end beccause it just gets so beat-up and I would rather splash out on something else.

That being said, someday I kind of want to get a luggage set that is more "fun" looking (what I have right now is more utilitarian) and am eager to see that Fashionaire line by Samsonite. I wonder how much it will cost!

I think it's gorgeous and if you can afford it, you should get it. It's a timeless style/material and you could have it for a very long time. And I agree with you about the handbag vs. luggage issue.
