I know I promised some when we first bought our house, but it's actually starting to look cute enough to share now, so I thought I would .
Master bedroom:
Those are our wood floors stacked in the corner there , not to be confused with an intentional piece of furniture! We are going to be replacing the carpeting in here and replacing the trim with nicer white stuff soon.
Living room, before and after:
Apparently I was a little overexcited to take this 'after' pic, and didn't bother moving that big box out or re-furniturizing the room first . You'll have to imagine it for now!
Outside, front and back:
We're going to start landscaping very shortly, now that spring has sprung! The poor dead tree in the center of our yard needs to come out, the japanese maple needs a more permanent home, and we need some freaking color! The fence is going to be replaced in the next couple of weeks, too.
This is unfortunately what we get to look at in our backyard right now . The previous owners had dug out a huge section for boat parking (!) that we got to fill in. Now we are the proud owners of a mountain, that I really wish was a vegetable garden instead. Wave to Mr. Elle!
I'll make sure to update with nicer yard pics as we progress on that project - I can't WAIT!

Sweet floors in the living room! Those are the ones you put in, right? Great job!
Nice to know that the boxes in the bedroom are flooring. In the pic you posted under my post all I could see was the corner of the box. I perhaps need my eyes checked, but the lettering I could read said "HARMON" which I assumed be harmonica. I was quite impressed that either you or Mr. Elle was that into the harmonica that you had boxes and boxes around just in case one broke. Seriously. I'm actually quite disappointed that it's flooring and not a lifetime's supply of harmonicas.
How do you feel about rhododendrons? I can totally picture them along the fence in the back and perhaps in the front as well. They have the most awesome blooms on them (there's a wonderful spread of the flowers in Blueprint magazine). I'm not sure of the soil/sun/shade conditions needed but I love the flowers on them.
I think you should keep Mount Elle and then when you and the hubby have fights you could go out and solve the argument with a good old fashioned game of King of the Hill.

You're hilarious! Boxes and boxes of harmonicas would have been much more intriguing!
As for rhodies, I actually have quite an aversion . They grow very easily here, so all the housing developers planted them friggin' everywhere around from the 50's through the 80's. So rhodies seem hopelessly dated to me, since you alllllwwaaayys see them outside older houses, most especially those houses that the original, now elderly, owners live in that appears to have been time-warped from the 50's, rhodies included!
I think I want to do some boxwoods in front of the picket fence so we have some year round structure, and then interplant those with bulbs/annuals for some color. Once the fence is replaced I want to do two Italian Cyprus flanking the gate to the back, and we've also now got a hydrangea (love!) and a bleeding heart under the big window on the side of the house, just in front of the to-be-replaced gate. I was thinking some pink Pieris and maybe some Heather (both super low maintenance and early blooming) along the fence but we'll see! Probably some grassy stuff too - they have neat winter structure to them. I might have to put my rhodie-aversion aside, because we do need some other everygreen shrubs .....

Elle, it's beautiful! What are your feelings on hardwood vs. laminate flooring? Our downstairs is mostly hardwood, but I have been thinking about laminate for the upstairs when we get ready to trash the carpet.

We chose laminates over hardwood for a couple reasons - 1, we hear they're much better for dogs . We have lots of friends w/dogs and both kinds of floors. One set has had laminates for 15 years and own five dogs, and the floors look as good as new. A couple other sets have hardwoods and only one dog each, and they've each had to refinish their floors twice in the past 5 years. 2, our house is a starter home, and we'd not likely see our money back for real hardwoods because, 3, laminates are significantly cheaper! Plus they're easy to install yourself without any nailing or glue .
Do your dogs scratch your wood floors? Or do I just happen to know an unusually high proportion of maniacal floor scratchers?!

no, they totally do! I was wondering if it was just as bad with the laminate. My dad has Pergo floors in his house, but his dogs' nails are super, super short, so it's hard to tell. Our wood floors def. need refinishing! I am glad to hear you like the laminate. I was leaning that way for sure!

Nice work! I feel the same way about azaleas as you do about rhododendrons. Hate 'em. I do have to say, check Wayside Gardens online for alternatives to the Italian Cypress. They can get to three stories high and are usually messy.
Some raised beds around that "mountain" would make it a great vegetable bed - either interlocking pavers or wood boxes.
On wood versus laminate, I think everyone's got it right. If you already *have* wood, keep it maintained, but if you're installing new floors in a home that isn't your forever-place, you definitely can consider laminate. Truth is, most househunters don't appreciate the difference.
