I am still flipping out. I don't even know where to begin speculating, as it seems so pointless. I did read an article I found on Google (from the Chicago Tribune maybe?) from a couple months ago where the producers basically will not use the word death but say the cast will change "permanently" after this episode. Which is just. Not. Good. Wah.
I just don't get it. Why?? I've been combing the internet for some kind of help here, but there's nothing. The last two episodes have not advanced the plot at all, either -- it's like they're stalling. They'd better not screw up this series; it's been so fantastic up to this point. I'd be especially sad because I've just about given up on Lost, and I can't seem to find any news about Dr. Who, either. That would be three dead shows in one year, and I'd only have Heroes left.
the producers release podcast commentaries after each episode and according the this podcast, apparently they just got so excited about the shock value of it, they just couldn't resist. which totally pisses me off. starbuck is my girl! i just can't deal with it!
but there are spoilers out there...apparently a girl on TWoP has seen the media screener tapes of the last couple episodes. so if you look...
but all i have to say is that Kara Thrace and Her Special Destiny is NOT to get blown to smithereens of her own free will. blah.
I'm so glad I have someone else to talk to about this. What I was thinking is that she is a cylon thus will be back. My DH said it looked like she was reaching for the eject button so maybe she made it out & the cylon got her? Man I hope so. DH said there is a lot of talk amongst the "real" fans (ie, fans before the series became popular) that they are kind of ticked that it's becoming a "space opera" & has nothing to do with running from the cylons. I can see that point but I personally like the space opera

I heard rumors that they were going to kill Starbuck off, but I thought it was a red herring. I definitely think she's not really "dead." I hope she comes back, Starbuck is a great character and I don't think her destiny was to go crazy and blow herself up. My theories:
1) She is a guide of sorts and her "special destiny" is to help humanity find Earth. To do that, she has to go to the place between life and death, and to get there, she had to die. "Leoben" was some kind of messenger or angel who was supposed to help her move to the next level. She'll be back to show the fleet the way to earth.
2) She's one of the remaining five Cylons and she went to the place that Three kept trying to see while she was waiting to be resurrected.
3) She was trying to die to see the place between life and death, like "Leoben" wanted her to, but the heavy raider recovered her body and the real Leoben is aboard it. She's alive and Leoben's prisoner. The only reason I think this is because I saw a screencapture from Apollo's window, and the heavy raider was seen outside his window. I think this is the least likely because I don't think she ejected from her ship before it blew up.
Regardless, we won't find out this season, I bet. The next ep is Baltar's trial (finally!) and I don't know what the last two eps are, but I don't think they'll do all of Baltar's trial in one ep.
I think it would be too obvious to have her be one of the five. I don't think she's really dead, either, but I can't really think of any satisfying alternatives...the whole episode just seemed so contrived to me. I suppose if I had to pick one theory, I'd go with the cylons have her captive theory.
About the last two episodes, I do know that we're supposed to have one of the five remaining Cylons reveal themselves on the stand at Baltar's trial. I'm looking forward to that. Not sure I like what they've done with Baltar's character recently, though (especially in that weird strike episode). He's best when he's not much of a deep thinker.
I agree with your theories, Bastet. I think I'm most inclined to believe the first one, but I really hope it doesn't get too weirdly metaphysical. I don't want Starbuck to be dead, but I don't really want her coming back as a ghost either... But maybe it would be more like Gandalf the White (is that what he was when he came back? I'm not a big LOTR buff). I don't know, but the more I think about, I think she's some kind of prophet or oracle or something...
And I'm annoyed they've left us hanging on Baltar's trial for so long...I heard the same thing about one new cylon reveal during his trial, but I also heard they're revealing four of the Final Five (and they're all people we know), but then again...I also heard they've shot a few alternate scenes to throw everyone off, so who knows? I really hope that the entire cast doesn't turn out to be cylons, cause that would just be lame.
There was some messed up stuff in that episode though...and weird imagery and strange lighting effects...what could it mean!? Oh yeah, and Starbuck's mom is a first class bitch! I just wanted to hug little Kara, poor thing.
Okay, better go post something about shoes before I turn into a ginormous nerd!

The only way I could see that happening is if the whole story is completely circular. i.e., humans made the Cylons, who made the human-looking cylons, who finally learned how to procreate on their own and became "humanity", who then made more cylons...etc. But that would make my head explode, so I hope it isn't the case.
I just... I... what? Starbuck! I have no idea what the hell is going on! Just watched the ep and am in a state of confused shock. I can't imagine that this is the end of her, but you never know...
