please help me find dining room table...
Permalink Closed

I want to get a rectangular dining room table (seats 6) in a rough-ish hewn wood. The table should have clean-straight lines but look old. Something like this would be awesome (a smooth birch or dark espresso would be too 'expected' for me). I don't like the proprotions of this table with the types of chairs I'm looking to use, but this is the kind of look I'm going for. I also don't love the $1700 price tag...table must be under $500 if at all possible.

I want to get some lime green Arne Jacobsen Series 7 (or a knockoff/something similar) for the seating.

Please help! I know very little about where to find furniture (that isn't from Ikea)!

for a nice wood table at that price point, target, ikea, and craigslist would be your best bets.  What about antiqueing or flea markets?  I don't think a new good quality one would be under $500, especially one that's "rough" since thats something a consumer with high end taste would want.

thats ikea- i know you probably already checked ikea or are trying to step up from ikea, but at $279, thats kinda great.   You could maybe rough it up yourself?

I bet someone could build one fairly easily and cheaply. Doesn't seem like it would be that hard....

This is from Broyhill, try picturing it without the farm chairs.  This collection looks fabulously aged.  Not sure if it's exactly what you're looking for and I'm not sure how much it is but Broyhill typically has a good mid-price range but I bet it's more than $500.

Here's a link (can't get the pic to post):

I would also check out flea markets/estate sales.

Also found this one at Pier1:

Dang, I can't get it to post either

Okay- this is gonna sound really really out there but have you looked at Amish made furniture? I'm not sure if it's geographically feasible but there a bunch of Amish furniture stores on the internet that ship. My sister recently bought a really nice dining table for (I think) about $100. It was one of those put-it-together-yourself jobbies and came unvarnished which might help with the "old" look. I think that for the right look you seem to be going for, unvarnished (with just a light sealing) would be best.

Here are just a couple (apparently if you buy internet rather than in store they are much more expensive...I don't know the name of the store where my sister bought her table!):

Okay..never mind. These damn things are expensive online! Most of them are running about $1000! Anyway, I guess the point of this pointless post was that I think you should check out Amish furniture if there's anyway you can buy from a store. The style that you're looking for also seems to be either Shaker or Misson- plain with straight lines. Uh, I hope that helps.

Lillykind... do you have any unfinished furniture stores in your area?? You can bring them a pic of what you want and they will build it for you , usually around the $350 price tag. Then you can stain it yourself to whatever color you like.

Without knowing how it looks 'IRL,' I must say that Ikea table is a darn good substitute.

I have the IKEA one that is pictured in one of the pp and for the price you pay, it's a great deal. Very sturdy, and also very heavy (took 3 people to carry it in our house). Looks exactly like it does in the picture IRL.  My husband and I get compliments on it a lot when people come over. As far as "distressing" it yourself, that is very possible, my twin 2 year old boys have distressed ours without even knowing it!

While poking around on West Elm for my own personal table search I found this:

 It's $329 with $75 shipping.

 $119 with $35 shipping.
