Energy efficient light bulbs anyone?

I love them! Making the switch has saved us a bit in our energy bill. And, we haven't had to change them for a couple years. In our place, regular light bulbs would burn out so fast, we'd be buying a pack every time we went to Target.

The boy introduced me to these light bulbs and has insisted that the next time I buy light bulbs that I buy those. Fine by me. I like to save money and energy.

And yes, Energy Star is a government program that rates the energy efficiency of many household appliances. Just look for the little blue energy star logo when you purchase anything. If it has it, it's approved. I work in an industry that sells products that would be eligible for up to $500 in tax credits for 2007 and we like to use this as a marketing tool.

Another thing you can get tax credits for is purchasing a hybrid car.

We use these exclusively in our house. We much prefer them to regular bulbs, because of the energy savings but also because they produce alot less heat and last longer than traditional bulbs.

We wait until Albertsons has them on sale and buy a few boxes - usually they go on sale for $7 per box of 5.

We also use them exclusively in our apt. and had not had to replace any of them yet since we've been married ( 3 yrs). Maybe my clumsy self has knocked over a lamp or two and broken them, so we keep a few extras. Our energy bill went down a bit as well.

My family just put some in our house this past week. I'm not sure I like the light that it gives off. Much different than a regular bulb. Kind of like flourescent lighting. Maybe I'm just used to the yellow glow of a regular bulb. On the plus side they do seem to give off more light than a regular bulb of equal wattage. And of course they save energy and $$$!

We have them in every single socket and fixture in our house - inside AND out! The recessed lightbulbs are slow to warm up and get to their maximum brightness, but they get the job done. DH estimates that we have saved at least $100 each month on our electric bill!

Another good thing, they don't get hot to the touch like regular ones. And you can buy a lower wattage than you need and still get the same amount of light (for example, if you need 100w, put in a 60w bulb and it will look like 100w).

These are the only bulbs we use too. I don't know how much they've saved us on our energy bill because we're really good about turning off the lights if we're not in the room. I really like how you practically never have to replace the bulbs.

$9.99 for a box of 5? I would totally do that - but at my grocery store, they're like $10 each! I don't want to bother with them just yet because I'll only be in this apt for a few more months and I don't have that many light fixtures in my studio, anyway. But as soon as I move somewhere more permanent, I plan on only using these.

i'm curious too.
I am really weird about lighting and literally want to die when we have this one light on in our apt. that kind of has a greenish/flourescent cast to it.

the ones i use are very much like a regular incandescent light bulb. they come in various 'shades' of light (soft yellow, white, etc).

Well, hubby got some for our house and I HATED them! I can't stand flourescent lighting, it gives me a headache and these seemed very flourescent to me. I like the warm glow that regular light bulbs give off, plus if these light bulbs show at all I think they look weird. JMO.

we have these too- they look just like regular bulbs and they dont take as long to warm up. $$$ though.

mine are by n-vision (i unscrewed to check :), and i got them at the home depot. i can't recall how much they cost, but they're way cool. literally. they don't heat up.
