i know theres products out there that you can buy to do this, but can i also just clean them with a little bit of soap and water? I'm mainly more concerd about my fat blush brush, I've had it for a long time and not once have i cleaned it!
You need to be careful what soap you use, it can strip the oil from the bristles and make them fall out. Baby shampoo works perfectly (and is usually what make up artist suggest if you aren't going to use the products made specifically for washing brushes). HTH!
i use smashbox brush cleanser from sephora and it was $12 but i still have over 3/4 a bottle after about a year of using the stuff.

ditto on the shampoo, also, make sure you let them dry with the bristles facing down so the clue doesnt dicinigrate (I know i butchered the spelling of that word)

although my fiance got me the full set of Laura Mercier make up brushes for christmas 2 years ago and when i washed them the first time in baby shampoo they smelled awful! i ended up purchasing trish mcevoy's brush cleanser and haven't had any problems since.
