i've got the spare bedroom painted a pretty chocolate brown :) YAY !! so now what about the ceiling? leave it white? i know it's a dumb question, but i'm really clueless.

that's pretty much what i thought. dark brown = cave. does this apply to all colors?
No, it isn't always the case. I think a lot of times it depends on the color and the room. Sometimes even a shade or two lighter of the wall color looks nice on the ceiling. I've never bothered with painting the ceiling a color for two reasons, one I like the uniform look of all white ceilings and secondly, painting a ceiling is a pain in the neck, quite literally I had to paint our family room ceiling when we knocked down a wall and I swore never to paint a another one ever again!!!

This idea might be a little non-standard, but you could paint the ceiling a really pale blue. With chocolate brown walls and white crown moulding, it would look really pretty.
