What songs make you cry?
Permalink Closed

I just realized these songs make me cry everytime I hear them:

-Good Man by India Arie

-Can You Feel the Love Tonight by Elton John (because it was playing during my c-section with my first son)

-Dance with my Father by Luther Vandross (which is ironic because I have never danced with my father-not even at my wedding-my dad's just not a dancer-type)...

-Daughters by John Mayer (which is also ironic because I don't have any daughters-just sons!)

...but anyway...what songs trigger tears for you?

Konstantine by Something Corporate. I know I sound like a 13-year-old. But it is such a sad song and I have emotions all tied up in it from my high school boyfriend. Obviously it's been eons since him and I don't cry for missing him, but I really loved him and I think just remembering how amazing love was for the first time, and how much our break-up hurt me (I think that was the hardest thing I've ever done)...it gets me every time!

"Baby" by Joe Nichols. I'm perfectly okay until he says the line "I got a call in Alabama, said to come on home to Louisianna, and come as fast as you can fly". It's just that one line that is like a switch. It turns me into a big blubbery mess

I don't cry every single time, but there are a couple songs by Meat Loaf that can get me going if I'm already kind of emotional. I know that sounds corny, but I just love him and some of his ballads get me in a way that nothing else can.

and "Leave" by Matchbox 20. There are more, but these are the ones that I think of first.

ETA: "Only Time" by Enya. I never really cared for it, but at a good friend's visitation they had a slide show of him on TV and just had like three songs looping. That's the only one I remember. Whenever I hear it I can't help but tear up.

  • When you wish upon a star- so corny, but it makes me think of how big the world seemed and how I thought anything was possible when I was younger.
  • Butterfly Kisses (Bob Carlisle?)- I my daddy
  • Christmas Shoes (Bon Carlisle again? I looked it up)- How can you not cry listening to it? This man likes to sing sad songs...
  • Dreams (The Cranberries)- reminds me of summer
  • Amazed (Lonestar)- the song they dedicated to my boyfriend and me at our prom
  • Come Away With Me (Nora Jones)- my grandma had cancer and had to go through chemo... for Christmas she wanted some soothing, mellow music to listen to during treatments. I got her a Nora Jones CD and she loved it. She talked about her all the time, especially this song. Whenever I hear it, I think about her and remember how much I miss her.

I could go on forever, but I'll stop now.

I run for Life by Melissa Ethridge ( I actually burst into tears in the middle of a spin class when this song came on)
Desperado by Eagles (reminds me of my first love and us listening to it over and over again in his bedroom)
I want love by Elton John
You raise me up by Josh Groban this song is amazing and it just moves me to tears every time I hear it. Alot of his songs do just becuase his voice is so spiritual.

Collette- I feel you on the Josh Groban.  We have these "sophisticated"/wine drinking/coaster using/take your shoes off at the door friends who always play that when we go over and i feel like i'm going to burst out into tears when i'm eating my mini quiches using perfectly pressed linen napkins.

the only one that i can think of is "wind beneath my wings" because that was song that my dad and i danced to at the father/daughter senior dance before he got sick.  i also remember watching beaches with my grandma when she was undergoing dialysis at home.  so for me that song reminds me of people i love, how sad the movie beaches is, and how unfair life can be....

Dreams by The Cranberries--this is my all-time favorite song and it is a happy kind of cry.  My best friend loves it too and we used to listen to it every day back in high school.

Dammit by blink-182--I know this is a weird one but I listened to this so many times after I broke up with a high-school BF and was so sad

I hope you dance by Leann Womack--I hate country so have no idea why this song sticks out to me, but it always makes me want to cry.

Fast car by Tracy Chapman--just a sad song IMO.

This is all highly embarrassing:

Dear Mama by Tupac
Nightshift by the Commodores
Appalachian Memories and actually a lot of other songs by Dolly Parton
Long Road - Eddie Vedder from the Dead Man Walking soundtrack
My Mom by Chocolate Genius
Nobody Knows Me by Lyle Lovett (this is really shameful because I get so choked up because it reminds me of the episode of 90210 where Dylan's new bride is killed-it was played in the scene where he is crying and hugging her wedding dress)
Sometimes You Can't Make it on Your Own by U2
And lots of country music. I grew up listening to it because of my parents. Two that come to mind:
Go Rest High on That Mountain by Vince Gill
Remember When by Alan Jackson - I first heard this song as I was fast approaching the end of my twenties and it struck a nerve.

ETA: Baby Mine from Dumbo. In the early nineties Bonnie Raitt covered it for an album of contemporary artists doing music from Disney. Heart wrenching!

It really all depends on my mood and current state in life, but there are a few songs that get me.

~ When you Know- Shawn Colvin
~ I Hope you Dance- Lee Ann Womack-- I am not a country music fan, but this song gets to me-- I was at a wedding once and the girl used it as the father/daughter dance and I decided that if I ever bother to have a wedding, that's what I want to use as well. It's appropriate for my relationship with my dad.
~ In His Eyes- from Jekyll & Hyde
~ What a Friend we Have in Jesus -- Yep, the hymn. It was my grandmother's favorite song and it was sung at her memorial service and it makes me think of her.

Actually, I think that's about it for me. There might be a few other ones but I'm too tired to think of more.

The only song that has that kind of effect on me is "The Living Years" by Mike and the Mechanics. I can't listen to it, I have to turn it off ASAP.

I'm a wreck in the car on long drives. I couldn't cry if a friend was crying in front of me but give me a cheesy ballad/musical/country song? I'm bawling.

Tiny Dancer - Elton John
Both Sides Now - Joni Mitchell
I'll Fly Away - pretty much any version
Winter - Tori Amos
One Day I'll Fly Away - Moulin Rouge/Nicole Kidman (oddly)

Then there's this country song that I can never remember until I hear it. It's something about "don't give up on me/I'll be there when my chores are through" or something like that. It gets me every time.

the little girl - john michael montgomery   it's such a sad, sweet song and i feel so bad for the girl hiding behind the couch, scared.
skin (sarabeth) - rascal flatts  about a cancer patient, the music video is so sad, i was bawling my eyes out when i saw it

Moon River by Harry Mancini - it is cheesy, but it was our first dance at our wedding.  Plus, whenever breakfast at tiffany's would be on TV when we were little, my dad would sing it in a fake awful voice to make us laugh!

It's a Wonderful World - Louis Armstrong- happy tears - but it does make me a little weepy.

Everybody Hurts - REM - because sometimes you just need to wallow in depression!

For some odd reason - Christmas carols make me a little weepy and sad that I'm not little anymore.

A lot of the music from Puccini's Madama Butterfly and Turandot - especially when butterfly knows she has been abandoned.

Kittenheels, I love that this was the first song you danced to at your wedding.  I want to make it my first song too (though that will not be happening for awhile).
