Getting Moved In...*UPDATE* need opinions

Do the items on the shelves look ok spaced as far apart as they are or do I need to fill the shelves more? Can I leave the greenery on top? I'm not sure what else to do on the top shelf because of the curved trim.

Are the decorative plates too much on the counter tops? I hate clutter and keep all my small appliances hidden. If it looks bad and suggestions for other things to do to keep it from looking to stark?

Looks lovely!  I like your dining room rug, and I'm soooo jealous of that big tub in your bathroom.

It's looking good.  I was just thinking about you and wondering how everything's going in MO.  And we need some updated pics of Maddie

I think it looks great. I suck at decorating, so I won't offer any advice. I love tchotchkes, so my instinct is to fill stuff up! Still, I like what you have done so far.

I like the greenery on the top shelves... it's a creative way of dealing with that space.  I also think your frames, etc. are nicely spaced out, though I'd probably add some nicely bound books with them, just to mix it up a bit.

As for the kitchen, I'd take the plates off the counter, or just use one at a time instead of two or three.  I feel like they compete too much and look too "matchy" with the plates in your cabinets.  Do you have some nice oil and vinegar bottles you could put in those little corners instead?  or some pretty platters you'd like to display?  How about some cookbooks that you could put on a little shelf like this:

(Personally, I don't mind big, empty counter spaces, because I love to cook and want everything out of my way!)

I agree that the plates on the counter would be better used elsewhere.  I was thinking they'd be cute hung on the wall above your cabinets, in a sort of triangular pattern.

In the empty corners of your counters, I think you could just put your canisters in one and knife set in the other.  Maybe one of those standing, spinning spice racks in the corner with your knives?  Some other things that could work is a cute cookie jar, or a cookbook propped open on a nice stand.  I think things just tend to look better grouped and at the ends/corners of counters personally, so you might just be able to get away with what you already have.

I like the greenery on the top shelves of your bookcases alot.  I'd probably use the bottom shelves for baskets - maybe you could put some of the kids' toys in them so it wouldn't matter if they were gotten into?

I really think everything looks nice, I love your decorating style.
Can I ask where you got your dining room table and chairs? I love them!

Actually I got it at a local flea market, where I used to like (Kane County Flea Market). It's old barn wood on top, the rest id new, the trestle and chairs, but made to look distressed. It's my favorite pice of furniture!

It looks fantastic!

I would def fill in the shelves more though. More baskets for sure. Just curious could you paint this a deep red to match all your other red accents??? It would really pop in that room.

It looks great.

I wouldn't keep the plates on the counter if it was my place - I'd want the space, plus I'd have to clean them all the time because foodstuffs would definitely splatter. They look great in the open cabinet.

I'm with AllieGurl; I'd like to see more going on with the bookshelves. I was thinking more "diversity" and color/shapes to intersperse with the framed photos.

Crazy idea, but: have you tried a few of the plates on those shelves? They have such great color and it would unite the kitchen and the family room a bit.

I have no suggestions for the kitchen because I'm not a kitchen person (mainly due to lack of good cooking skills). But for the shelves, I'd kill those babies with books. Books in between the groupings of frames, books arranged artfully next to (or under) the candles, and pretty coffee table books on the bigger, open shelves. There are tons of cool ways to display books - even if it means going to your local flea market and buying up lots of old books you've never read.
